I have been running my trusty V1 that I purchased in 2000. I love it, I love the directional arrows but I am getting a little tired of the constant K band alerts I get around my area (I live in Ohio...the highways are a constant barrage of K band traffic flow radar). I admit that I am a little tired of the all-red display and difficulty I have at night discerning between the K and Ka bands.
So I hear about this Max, get excited and pre-purchase one thinking for some odd reason that I might actually receive it shortly after the launch date and be able to use it on an Ohio to Florida drive we had coming up. Of course that didn't pan out, so I was left with my V1 which really was awesome except for the K band falsing. I am now wondering how I am going to live without the directional arrows of the V1...for me, actually finding/seeing the LEO is part of the rush or satisfaction I get from owning a detector in the first place. I can't imagine having to search for the alert source every time. I have watched all these Max videos and sure, it warns in plenty of time (so does my old V1) but more often than not (and I wonder if these guys even realize this) the driver is searching for, and wondering where the LEO is. Of course danger only lurks in front and behind, but that's enough for me to get a bead on a bogey. During my last trip, there were several instances of a LEO coming up from behind, and I knew it.
Anyway...I have been afforded some extra time to ponder my Escort Max purchase and have the time to cancel my order. The reviews I have seen so far do not get me excited at all for this detector. I guess the display is cool and yes I wish V1 had a little more in the way of differentiation between bands (like colors) but other than that only the GPS capabilities seem like a major new feature. In my experience, I am not sure how much that (GPS) would be an asset for me.
According to V1's site, I can simply send in my V1 and they will send me a brand new one for $279. With the extra cord I also pre-purchased for my (yet to be delivered) Max the cost of a brand new V1 vs the Max is roughly half. The new V1 will be in the smaller case, and obviously have all the new features that my current detector doesn't have. So that's $279 for a brand new V1 vs. $600 for a Max. The cost isn't that much of a factor to me, but I don't want to throw away $$ for a detector that has nice bells and whistles but leaves me wondering where the LEO is and may also have me fooling around with GPS and whatnot while I am driving.
So, my question to those here - what would you do? Are the GPS-enhanced capabilities of the Max and their so-called "DNA" processing or whatever going to outshine and be more useful than a new V1 with my beloved arrows? I am assuming that the actual detection capabilities are similar enough between the two that it comes down to features, and from what I've read so far, the Max doesn't even outperform other, currently-available Escort models. But...as they say, it will with all this USB-connectivity and firmware upgrade technology.
I guess I am looking for opinions from those who may have switched between V1 and Escort and how that worked out. At this point I am seriously thinking about canceling my order and snagging a new V1. I would have to live with the display, but I don't know if I can live without my arrows.
