Default New V1 User...Observations and Questions

    Hey there,

After having my V1 for about 3 days now there are some things that I have noticed about it. Some I like, some I dont.

The first thing I noticed is that the side detection is horribly weak in my car. I was being followed by a cop (about 500 yards back) and had full KA signal strength. Turn into a U-turn ramp thingy so I was now perpendicular to the road. As soon as he passed by me and was to my side the signal dropped down to 1 and then to none (when he was only 100yards past). Now perhaps this is because the radar is pointing away from me (Dont know if that matters or not), but overall I have just noticed that the side detection is really lacking (might be due to my dark [non-metallized] tints...maybe.

The other thing I noticed about the V1 is that although the Advanced Logic mode is a good idea, it doesnt really work for me. I turned the RD onto big L in hopes to get rid of the crazy amount of X I encounter. However, this only filtered out around half of it (maybe). Is there anyways I can just turn the X off?

The last thing I noticed while driving was that even some bushes may block signal strength (just an observation). I was driving and although you cant see it (due to the bushes and trees) I knew there was a gas station cops like to hang out at just ahead. So im driving...nothin on the RD, then as soon as I can actually see the gas station the KA jumps to about 4 signal strength, and sure enough, the cop was right there.

Overall to me though, the V1 seems less than it was hyped up to be. Granted I have not been using it for more than 3 days, but it just seems sort of weak to me. Maybe its my tints (I do have windshield tint), but they are suposedly non-metallized. Any ideas?

Also, how do I see what version I have. I tried holding down the mute button for like 20 seconds, but nothing happened.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Facing away, at a 90 degree angle on KA is a heck of a thing for an RD to pick up... granted that 100yards is rather shabby.

Yeah, its a great idea on paper... overall the V1 (as Iknox calls it): a little false box... I could never get mine to shut-up in the city.

It is extremely overhyped by all the zombies on here, it is too bad, people buy the V1 thinking they will get detection leaps and bounds above the compition, its simply not true, detection is on par with the 100dollar less units... don't expect anythinggreat out of the V1 above its competition, its just not the case, as your finding out.

If you got it from VR in the past 3 days its a .826 (Don't worry)... if you didnt (ie: ebay) this may be the cause of all your issues.

Radar waves can have a problem going through solid objects... bushes shouldnt do all that much, but that along with signs in the area (for the gas station) can decrease detection range because radar doesnt pass through them well if at all.

    A few things to consider:

    Is your V1 level?

Have you tried it away from the tint? Go up to a automatic door... hold it behind your windshield were its normally mounted then out the window (signal strength should be the same).

Maybe you got a bum-unit... it happens TRUST ME.

Try it for a few more days.

not great for the city, unless you program it. all RD's suck in the city.

its not EXTREMELY overhyped. air hates the price of the v1. from reading posts from day 1 air hasn't like the price of the v1. i got mine as a gift so i dont really care about the price cause it didnt cost me a thing. and i love it. and it performs WAY better than ANY RD when it comes to laser detection, as well as K and X band. Ka band is questionable though i will admit with this J bug crap and sometimes that poor range as you have mentioned.
do me a favor, get your car on level ground, get outside the car from every window and angle and make sure the v1 is lined up straight through the front and back as well as level. everyone swears they mounted it correctly only to notice they need to move it a click or two higher or lower to make it perfectly even. pretty much what air said, is your v1 level. i think this helps when it comes to long distance detection range. also u can try to disable pop as some have reported the v1 working as normal with pop OFF.

thats not how you check your version. the v1 has to be OFF, and when turning it ON make sure your holding down the mute button at the same time. hold it down until all the lights that light up come off and then you will be in programming mode. then push the mute button once and it will spit the version at you.

and one more thing, at least you wont have to worry about bel releasing a new model RD which outdates yours causing u to spend another 300+ bucks. the v1 saves you money in the long run.

In general, radar going away from you and facing away from you is going to be hard to pick up, unless there is lots of stuff infront of it to bounce off of.

Turning sideways so the antennas aren't getting a good view is going to cut range down even further. NO detector is going to pick that up real well.

As for the gas station, what direction was the cop facing? IF the radar wasn't aimed in your direction the signal is going to be weak and hard to pick up until you are close.

Any detector is going to be noisy in town, either deal with it or turn it off. I tend to turn mine down in town since there are so many door openers and such. HOWEVER, you must remember that it is doing it's job when it alerts to all the door openers... that is what it is designed to do. No detector can tell the difference between a door opener and a cop using radar.

    Edit:
Take Air with a grain of salt... From all the reading I have done around here, he is usually quite negative.

airmoore owns a V1 and other top three detectors?

i think he just gives honest opinions based on experience

i give more credibility to members who have used and experienced a couple top detectors as oppose to members who base their opinions on what they have read or heard. no offense guys

I have used top 3 and I disagree with Air, but I'm not nearly as vocal.

I think the V1 is noticeably better than the competition (and undoubtedly more consistent) and the customer service is also noticeably, ergo it is worth the extra $75-$100

That said, it is not for some, and they are lucky insomuch as there are many options to chose from.

Number of posts that a member has doesn't necessarily mean much, what does is thier experience with RD's as well as information they've gathered over time. Some folks have a lot of posts, experience and information. Some folks have a smattering of all three.

I'm new to the board but far from new with RD's. I've learned a lot from reading the board though if the information is indeed credible.

The V1 I got brand new out of the box in February was a flaming piece of
S H I T. I just got it back. They said nothing was wrong with it, however they put new guts in it and said that I should be happy. We shall see.

One of the main reasons I went with the V1 was that it was very comparible to the BEL and Escort units with the ability to upgrade with new technology without buying a brand new radar detector.
    Again, we shall see.
If my new experiences with my new, new V1 is subpar with the BEL RX-65 I just sold, the V1 is going on E-bay, and my word of mouth advertizing for any one particular radar detector will reflect my experiences.

You can change whatever you like. If you do not understand exactly how to shut off X band after this just let us know and one of us will surely help you out

v1 is not considerably better then an X50 RX65 or other top detectors

the V1 is better in X, Laser, Pop, Laser and K (2 or 3 of which dont really matter)

Ka, which i think is most widely used band, is detected easily by the top 3, not much difference in performance

    the v1 has the arrows

    anyway...

    # of posts could count for some credibility because it means you have been reading posts in this forum and hopefully gathered knowledge about the equipment.

there are many educated members here that post a lot
