Default V1 Laser Alert, mounting help + certain models of TV remotes

'againstme' started a thread before about him using his cable tv remote to set off the laser alert on his v1 (that got way out of hand and was locked for very good reaon). while i was veiling the front of my car yesterday i figure why not give it a try.

so in my friends yard i barrowed her cable tv remote and went out and started to change channels while pointing it at my v1 and yes it did set off the laser alert on my v1.

so then i tested the range at which it picked up the laser alert and saw that it was kinda shotty. so i mounted the v1 just a few inches lower, this time having it right below the edge of the tint strip rather than behind it and i noticed it picked up the laser alert at a better range than before.

so a heads up to anyone trying to figure out the best way to mount your v1 to recieve laser alerts, just mount and test it with one of the remotes in your house. im pretty sure at least 1 of them will do the job.

    thats great

i was worried about that so i mounted mine right below the tint strip, suction cups are hidden in the tint but the v1 lens is right under the tint

i guess i can do this same test you do

    --------

out of topic.... you know those remotes that still work from another room? (i.e. bose) do they send radio waves and not the regular infra red, they have amazing range

Yes a remote control can activate the V1 and you can get a relative impression of what may be a better or worse location to mount the RD. However it's common sense that tint blocks light, and therefore IR to some extent, so there's not much use to this method. For windows that have heat or IR blocking coating - I think this is all over the window so experimenting is pontless because there's no good place to use it.
It is somewhat nice to be able to test the system to verify it works from sensor to piezo speaker.

I used to have my V1 mounted on the windshield where it was half-in half-out of the blue tint band. I used to get Laser falses (at least once a week) with it mounted like that.

I have since lowered my rear-view mirror, and this allowed me to center and slightly lower my V1. It now sits just under the blue tint band. Since I have done this (about a month ago), I have not had a Laser false.

Could be coincidence... maybe I just haven't been behind any Envoys etc.

what is it with these EE people thinking they know everything. i had EE people in my classes and they learned the same things i did. im srue u had to take some EE classes that were in common with physics, that is if u at least went to a decent university. laser is actually more physics, so mister EE i would tone it down a little as the stuff here wasn't covered in the curriculum in your school and i was just continuing a thread from againstme about laser alerts on the v1 from a cable remote, ok mister genuis

thats EXACTLY what i did from this experience. it was half and half and then i lowered it to right under, and i havent gotten any of those laser falses anymore. its only been a day so let me not jump the gun, but we'll see  8)

    1) I have a BS (stop snickering, that's Bachelor of Science) degree in Physics. My Masters is in EE. So lasers were very much covered in my schooling.

    2) Carlito's results were different from yours. So what he proved is that tint that's not going to affect laser, doesn't affect laser. And tint which does block laser, blocks it. So I guess you could say that this method is good for discerning IR-blocking tint from non-IR blocking tint. Regardless, why not avoid the issue and mount it just under the tint line. This way you're not taking a chance that even a little IR is blocked. With laser speed monitoring you need every little edge you can get.

why? RD's are not LEGAL everywhere. so some people need to hide them. thats why.

and originally you said that it was common sense and that there wasn't much use to this method, but there is some use to this method as you have suggested.

my apologies if you got offended when i had to defend my original post, which actually wasn't my original idea, it was another members, againstme whose thoughts i continued
