With the V1 being so quiet (I live in the sticks) I decided to mount both my 8500 (non X50) and my V1 high on the windshield, as far apart as possible and take a little drive.
8500 had X-band off and SWS off, I tried this to see if it would stop the Self_cal and so far it has. V1 was factory, little l.
8500 falsed Ka constantly while in the sticks. V1 was silent. I don't think the 8500 has always done this, but the only things that may have changed are cell phone towers and the age of the 8500. It has done this for the last 6 months WITHOUT the V1 in the car.
I then pull up to a traffic light in a light urban area. A few feet before stopping the V1 goes to almost full alert on K band. Expecting a LEO I look around quickly - and there he is. Same intersection - he is on the road going south (I'm going west) across the other two lanes, about 50 ft out of the intersection w/ lights on and someone pulled.
The 8500 stayed silent the whole time. I remember looking at it and thinking how "dumb" it looked.
Still, I didn't think the V1 gave much warning and have also thought that when going past verified X and K band grocery stores. The V1 has to be within a couple of hundred feet and pointed right at the doors to alert.
Is this normal?
Seems the 8500 would go off anywhere near a shopping plaza. I remember reading (but can't find) that the V1 doesn't "look too high or low, too far right or left, because these aren't valid threats". Sure makes for a pleasant commute but I'm wondering if this new unit is functioning properly.
I have now retired the 8500, and since I am in FL I turned off X-band on the V1. It's nice now that it is absolutely quiet at my favorite grocery store, but if i get an X-band ticket in FL, I'm coming back to this forum for donations.
Please note the title. Two detectors were mounted at once. The 8500 was old and self-caled before. So not a fair test.
Still the V1 picking up the K band LEO while the 8500 was silent is enough for me.
