Well just got back....nothing scientific here guys...just a couple of country bumpkins testing I don't think The Guys of LIDAR have anything to worry about...so here goes.....
I just went an met him out on HWY 46. 2 lane country highway..well traveled by folks going in between New Braunsfelds and Boerne...Speed limit is 65mph but everybody does 75-80mph. Rolling hills....he wanted to 'shoot me" in his favorite place which is just as you crest a hill and he sits about 4 football fields down the other side on the shoulder......that is where he shoots you.....right as your coming down that hill...I have my Pro78 in the car with me for this......
Right as I get to the top of the hill he shoots me....my Pro78 goes off.....I'm doing 65mph by the way About a football field later he shoots me again.....Pro78 goes off again and he starts waving his arms....I pull over and backup to him....he tells me the first shot didnt work but he got me the 2nd time.....So I tell him he owes me a beer cuz my detector went off the first time and he didnt get my speed so I win
LOL...he was impressed with the tape...said he always gets the first shot right at the top of the hill......
So for what it is worth...there is our highly scientific Texas Country Laser vs. 3M tape test

I drove by there this morning....I would say where he normally gets folks is about 1200 ft...mebbe a tad less.....and the 2nd shot where he got a reading on me was about 700-800 ft. He did say he always shoots the plates....I ask him about the headlights and he said with the daytime running lights it is a pain in the butt/erratic so he just shoots the plates and that is what they teach them in school. So to "protect" your headlights and not your plate maybe need some additional thought IMHO.
And frankly if a $6 roll of tape that is transparent and will not draw attention of the LEO's ( and gives you enough to do everybody you know plates )and gains you a 2nd chance....mebbbe isnt a bad investment. We are going to do it again soon....he wants to win his beer back
Indeed, we protect our headlights primarily for the fact that the optics (including both the physical lenses as well as the rather "unfortunate" reflectors) present rather large IR-returns. At-distance, the divergence of the LIDAR beam would also cover the headlights, and that presents the need to give them due attention.
As range decreases and the beam gets tighter, headlight protection becomes, as with front-plate protection, an issue of selective point-weakness protection.

Yea, I still think putting the plate in the window is a good idea in TX as there is a Court case that says it's legal, but then they don't have a target so you'd have to use veil.

You can I have some rather higher end investments and don't really feel like putting the plate in the front window of my Mercedes/GTO/LTX Silverado.....I am a country bumpkin by birth but don't feel the need to advertise it LOL...
3M Clear Duct Tape on top of a Veil on the headlights has been good to me, plate has tape only, two save's under 1000feet with the V1.
Weird thing is my already crooked safety inspector makes me take off the tape but not the Veil, and right after I run to office depot and put the tape right back on, quick and easy.
