Sorry I was super busy at work.

This is the camera I use. It's very expensize. I paid like $1200.00 for it a couple years back.

Axis Communications - AXIS 213 PTZ Network Camera

I think those leaks around the plate are the plastic slots for the screws in the laser shield.

I plan to take some more controlled shots when I get some time. I did this really quick. I need to play with the angles more.

IR, no doubt is cool...but one can really achieve the same type thing in the VIS with a flashlight that has a "zoomable" beam lens.

Don't MAGLITEs have that capability?

The same areas that generate hotspots in the IR should be the same in the VIS since light is light...

I don't mean to contradict you, but, well, I think I'm going to contradict you here

For MOST things, IR and visible light react similarly to any given material, but there are DEFINITELY materials that show vastly different IR vs visible light properties, and Veil itself is the best example of this phenomenon...maybe 80% transparent to visible light, but only 10% transparent to IR light. You pointed out in your recent video that your shirt, while black to visible light, didn't appear very dark at all to the Gen III milspec IR camera. And MOST importantly, we have discussed that some car paints are black to visible light, but are SPECIFICALLY engineered to reflect IR light in order to reduce heat absorption.

Thus, I firmly believe that an IR view is more valuable than a simple flashlight or flashbulb.

I agree with JDS things look quite different with the IR.

Note that there is a problem with my test (as well as the Sticky thread on IR).

That being close causes steep angles. Where the LIDAR is 500-1000ft away it is more or less parrellel to everything.

In my photos above I was parallel to the Plate but not to the headlights.

I don't have enough IR power to do 1000 ft. So plan to simulate it will multiple parellell shots.

In the Sticky Videos he was all over the place with that camera it was very unrealistic what LIDAR will typically see.

jds,

no doubt, that's true (certain things will appear under ir differently than the vis), however, in so far as glare from curvatures, chrome, etc, i believe that an ordinary flash light will also demonstrate the same kinds of hotspots as one in the ir and in the case of the mil nvd, there's a high amount of light amplification that is taking place as well, regardless of the wavelength.

of course there is a reason that we have such equipment, but for most folk, i think an flash light will be enough along with some good intuition (and in this respect, i hope those videos will be enlightening.)

Many security cameras are IR-capable since they're designed to operate in conditions with little or no visible light. You can probably find some for far less than $1200 but I'm just guessing here. You probably don't need all the additional features that come on Axis cameras.

Doesn't Axis also manufacture red light camera systems?

Are you thinking of either ATS (American Traffic Systems) or RedFlex?
