Default Driving habits with your RD

Hey There! I've been driving with the Pro-73 for a few months now. I guess you could say I'm an experienced driver, and have never once been involved in an accident, got a ticket, etc. I love the RD itself, but I am facing a bit of a problem.

In my small New Hampshire town the cops use KA band. I like to drive fast, generally 50-55 in 30-35 Mph's. (20-30 over the limit, max) I only drive this way when I know I will not be a danger to myself or anyone else (Back roads, un-populated areas, etc) My town is funny in the sense that the cops never seem to be in the same place twice, and half the cops I encounter use dash radar while driving, half don't.

There have been times that I have driven past cops doing 50 Mph in 35 Mph zones with no radar warning coming from my RD. I've never been pulled over by the police for speeding. (I only tell you this so you can get an idea of my situation  )

I guess my 2 questions are how fast do you drive with your RD and do you think I am flirting with disaster the way I drive? What the chances a cruiser will pull you over if they do not have a radar clock on your vehicle. I wish the police around here had routine radar habits, but they are anything but. Anything advice you could share with me would be great. I know this is a little off-topic, but I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Welcome aboard PPPOE... what NH town are you in? I'm from NH too.

Not all cruisers are equipped with radar, and not all cops are interested in catching speeders all the time. Depending on the size of the town/city, the department might have a traffic division, a domestic disputes division, etc. Chances are the domestic disputes guys won't be running radar.

As for me, I typically do 10-15 over tops. Even with a detector you can still get nailed with instant-on radar or laser and get ticketed, so to stay ticket-free it's always a good idea to not speed excessively (especially if you're the lead car) and to stay alert.

Also, cops have other ways to determine speed without using radar or laser: pacing, VASCAR (basically a stopwatch), and visual estimation are the most common non-radar methods.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

I see! I live in Bedford, right outside of Manchester. Thanks for the reply!

I've had 2 friends of mine go to court over speeding tickets. The first one had a radar detector and was doing 48-49 in a 30 at 5AM while going to work. Where I live, at 5AM the only people on the road are you and the cops. They didn't hit his car with radar. In court, they asked to see the radar read-out (Or whatever they had to prove his speed) The cops could not present one, so the case was dropped.

The second time, my friend got pulled over by the police for speeding on the highway. Again, his radar detector (The v1) did not go off. The officer pulled him over, and my buddy was very friendly and complied with everything. Right as the ticket was being written, he asked why his radar detector didn't go off even though the officer said he had a radar clock. The officer didn't answer, threw away the ticket and gave him a warning.

I live in Manchester, so I know Bedford pretty well. They have K and Ka radar, but I rarely see them use instant-on, usually they just leave it on if they have it. My friend got lasered in Bedford once a few years ago, so they have that too, but I've never seen it myself.

I like it, I've picked up cops about 1 mile away with Ka band on a long stretch of road that we have here in NH. The problem in my area is that the cops cruising the back-roads have their radar guns in a low-power mode, so by the time I get the Ka alert the cruiser is already in my view. If you live in a more populated area, the Ka is really good on the 73.

I'm extremely happy with the 73. All the downsides I have read about it really don't affect me and it's really a great unit.

ill have to say thats me too, but on the interstates I usually maintain about 20 over (In anticipation of the new 80 MPH limits...if they ever come), traffic permitting that is
