I am in the market to own my first RD after my wife received a speeding ticket on her way home from work. I have read many professional and nonprofessional opinions. I would like to get one for her and one for me so cost is going to be an issue. I was given a (new) PNI rechargeable Steel Eye which looked and felt cheap and barely gave any indication it was even working - not even any falses, so I began the research.
I picked up a 1788 on clearance from RS for $99 because it got the 2nd highest rating for cordless detectors from Roy. It seems to be fairly sensitive but gives a lot of falses because of the sensitivity. I find myself wanting to use the PNI because it doesn't give any falses which drive me crazy and have the "cry wolf" effect, even though I know it doesn't have near the range. (No, I don't run them at the same time)
I am considering picking up a pro 58 since it seems to be the best bang for the buck and I don't care about the extras on the 73 (unless it has better filtering). Is it worth it to get the 58 over the 1788 or will the performance be near identical? I don't care so much about the cordless factor, my main concern is getting POSITIVE radar response with the fewest falses. Also, I have read the manuals and tried all of the city settings, POP, filter etc. to try and get the best results but it still gets a lot of falses. Even on C2 with X off I still get significant K falses. I realize falses are the main problem for the less expensive models in general, but I was hoping to stay as close to $100 as possible. Thanks in advance for any help.
