    Default Pro 58 road test

Well this last weekend I took a trip down to Evansville, IN to watch the hydroplanes and I was excited to finally get a chance to use it over the open highway instead of just in town highway driving.

My luck must be bad or good depending on how you want to look at it.
I only saw 2 LEO'S that had anyone pulled over and none of them ever set off my detector. I saw several LEO's but none of them were clocking anyone as well.

So I still can not give a full report on distances but I can tell you that the PRO 58 did false alot on K bands (over 75 times) and ka bands (22 times)on my trip there and back (409 round trip miles)

I am really disapointed in the falses I got from this unit, I was constantly lifting my foot off the gas during the whole trip.
I drove both interstate and state highways and ran both city 2 mode and highway settings with this detector.

The instructions say that the detection on highway mode and city 2 mode are the same except X band is disabled in city 2 mode.

My opinion on this unit at this point is very disapointing when it comes to filtering out falses, it may be great at detecting the real thing but I can not deal with the falses this gave me.

I have another long drive this weekend coming and I will take the Pro 58 with me again and maybe I will get some distance testing this time.

As of right now I think I am going to look at buying one of the big 3 detectors and give the pro 58 to the girlfriend.

I am not saying the Pro58 is a bad detector since I have not had any real encounters with actual detection but the falses were enough to drive me crazy and not feel comfortable with this detector.

I will do an update on this after next weekends trip..

I'd e-mail whistler and ask how to disable POP detection on the Pro-58. That should cut the false alerts quite a lot.

Worth a shot on this, Email has been sent to Whistler.

This could have been due to other drivers with Cobra, Radioshack or Uniden RDs causing the falses. Something out there was transmitting.....

I have already emailed Whistler Support regarding this. If there is a way to disable the POP mode on the 58 like there is on the 73, than that might be worth trying.

You could also run regular City Mode, which filters out weak signals of all bands I believe.

I was aware of this problem and took that into consideration, but at times I was the only one on the road when the falses happened.

As for regular city mode forget it! all that did was add x band falses to the mix.

Hopefully there is a way to disable POP on the PRO58 and this might fix some of the issues.

I am hoping Whistler can tell me how to disable POP, As far as detection goes Roy gave it high marks and I do not doubt in a real situation that I would get plenty of warning but the falses are to many!

I look forward to your reply boomerman. Friends have asked about the Whistler Pro's but i'm hesitant to suggest them because of the limited amount of information about them. Hopefully it will work out for you.

I called Whistler and asked them about POP mode on the Pro-58.

I asked what a POP alert would look like on the 58, and the Tech said that if a Leo is using POP you would most likely get hit within 1000 feet and it would be a short alert but 7/9 or higher signal strength.

So I don't think by turning off POP it would cut down on falses. Most falses are weak signals. The Tech also said that you cannot turn off POP on the 58 anyway.

In that case, i'd return the thing. That level of falsing would be completely unacceptable to me.
