Default Looking for My First RD

I was looking around at garage sales yesterday and found a Whistler Spectrum 1. I had some fun playing around with it, and I feel that it worked pretty well for the <$5 range that I was looking at (it picked up the only LEO I saw from about 1/4 mile), but it sparked my interest in getting my first modern RD.

I'm looking for a model <$100 and preferable <$60. I understand the "you get what you pay for" and "the rd pays for itself" arguments, but I'm a high school student on a budget and I really don't speed all that much. After spending a couple of days looking at various models, it seems that my best bargain is the Pro 58. I'm wondering how people who've used this RD would rate it, and if anyone has any other suggestions in my price range.

Buy yourself at least a Pro 73. If you look hard enough though you can buy a BRAND NEW Pro 78 for $135 (SHIPPED)!!!!!

The Pro-58 and Pro-73 are essentially the same detector, just with more features on the 73. The 58 should have the same range, sensitivity, and filtering as the 73, just with fewer features and a simpler display.

And how would the Pro 58 and the Pro 73 compair to the Pro 78 in terms of its range, sensitivity, and filtering?

Filtering on the 78 is, IMHO, FAR superior. And range is better too.

you could probably fine a good used pro 73 for about 60 bucks now. Pro 78 is gonna probably be out of your price range for right now. Pro 73 is by all means a great detector and up until recently was still whistler flagship detector. Also the spectrum 1 was not manufactor by whistler group inc. even though it says whistler. So please do not judge the spectrum 1 to newer whistler detectors. Also the spectrum 1 only detected x and k band only and no laser. I must admit early whistler detectors left allot to be desired. Of course now whistler goes beyond your expectations in the products they produce.

My mom has a Pro-58 that I bought for her. If you search in the video section, I made a couple videos of it, testing it around here.

My mom's happy with it. She doesn't really speed, usually 5+, if even that. The thing that I notice (when compared to my X50), is that it likes to pick up other radar detectors on Ka. Not too much to become annoying, but more than a higher end produce (as can be expected.)

If X isn't used in your area, keep it in City 2.

One gripe I have is the dim screen and low volume. My mom has it mounted up high, out of the sun and the screen still seems washed out a bit.

On very strong K band, it sometimes confuses it for Ka. But hey, it keeps you on your toes.

Overall, you aren't going to be speed much I say this is a good entry radar detector. It provides adequete warning with constant on. Just make sure you don't go much over 5-10 over PSL.

Here are the videos And keep in mind these are without much traffic, so range may or may not be more or less than that.

I agree. I think the 58 would be OK for you, as long as you don't let the false alerts numb you to possible threats.
