Last Friday on the Palisades I approached a NYS Trooper coming into a right hand curve. He was on the left. It was a fairly open area with no trees, but he was hidden behind some shrubs. I was very dissappointed with the detection. Put it this way, I saw him before my RD went off and it only churped within less than 50' of his vehicle. Now, if the RD stayed silent I would assume that his radar was off. However, when I passed him I did get a one second alert, but it came up as Ka 3 and disappeared. There was no ramp up what so ever and the signal I did catch was so weak. I was totally baffled. Oh yeah, I was doing ~15 over PSL, but I guess I was able to slow down enough once he was in my sight. Thank goodness luck was on my side. I went back to the same exact spot on the parkway today at PSL and it was a different NYS Trooper in the same position (perpendicular to the road) and I got ZIPPO signal from him. Now I'm sure he wasn't sitting there for his health, so I don't know what to think. I'm a little worried about trusting the unit anymore. As far as the Your Speed Signs, I pick up about half of them with a good ramp up (they are in K band) and the other half don't alert me until I'm under it. Just wondering what you guys think. This is my first RD so maybe that's just the way it is.
Thanks for listening, RICH
PS: I don't want anyone to think I'm complaining, because I'm not. I'm the type of guy to accept the way things are. If this is the way it is supposed to work that's ok, but I just want to know before I exceed PSL on that parkway anymore. PSL is only 50! It's very easy to get tagged. Thanks.
