I'm on my third Whistler Pro-78 radar detector. The first radar detector had a defective display screen. The second radar detector would not retain my preferred settings.
I've had this detector for just over one month and I have made two trips to Houston from Baton Rouge, with the last being yesterday.
Three weeks ago, I drove from Baton Rouge to Houston along I-10 west bound. On the Atchafayala Basis (between Baton Rouge and Lafayette), which is about a 20 mile stretch of bridge over water, there are 2 - X band radar drone, placed approximately 6 - 8 miles apart, one facing west bound and the other facing east bound. The reason why I know this is because I have seen them personally on numerous occasions as my job has me traveling from Baton Rouge to Lafayette quite often and I have confirmed this with a previous V1 radar detector I had.
Traveling towards the radar drone (I-10 West), I did not pick up a signal from my PRO-78, until I was within 300 feet of the X band drone, using HIGHWAY mode, with X band enabled. I couldn't decide at the time if it was good filtering or poor detection. With my previous V1, in "A" all bogeys mode, I would pick up this signal approximately 2.5 + miles away before full ramp up.
As I continued to travel I-10 West, I recongize that I passed the other radar drone facing the opposite direction (oncoming traffic heading I-10 East), but I did not receive an alert. Granted, there is some distance in between the interstate, but my V1 would always alert me to a signal up ahead and then when I passed it, it would show the arrow behind.
Making my way into Lake Charles, LA (I-10 west towards Houston), Lake Charles has 2 - K band speed signs, facing oncoming I-10 West traffic, which I picked up .7 mi away. Not bad, not good, IMO.
Lake Charles also has another K band speed sign, facing I-10 East bound oncoming traffic and the interstate through there is rather curvy and hilly, but I did not pick up this signal until I passed the speed sign and I could see a speed display flashing in my rear view mirror. The V1 would always detect this signal early and long before I could actually see the speed display sign in my rear view mirror.
Fast forward to Thursday, June 14, 2007 ...
Traveling I-10 West towards Houston, the X band drone on the Atchafayala Basis, is now being detected as a K band signal, only ramping up to 3 when I pass it. I can confirm that the X band drone had not been replaced. The PRO-78 simply identified the radar band incorrectly. Also, I was very disappointed at the ramp up as I was the only one on the road (not another car for 1/2 mile + and the PRO-78 only ramped up to 3.
Moving in towards Lake Charles, 2 K band speed signs, .7 mi away. Making my way around the curvy, hilly section of I-10 West, the K band speed sign facing east bound travelers on I-10, I picked up the signal this time, .1 mi away.
Driving home on Friday, June 15, 2007 (very short trip), I-10 east bound making my way over the water in Lake Charles (by the casinos), my PRO-78 detects a KA band signal approximately .6 mi away and then shuts off. As I am traveling downward, at the end of the bridge, a Lake Charles police office in a new Dodge Durango, blasts me with instant on KA (or so I think, although the PRO-78 did not indicate PULSE) and I am the only car on the road and the detector only ramps up to 3 again. I'm doing the PSL, but all of a sudden, I see a Dodge Durango behind me. I knew what he was doing (running my plates) and when I moved over to the right lane, he edged up right beside me. I didn't look, but after a half-mile of staying neck and neck, I looked over at him with a "WTF" and we made eye contact and he proceeded to speed off.
Remember that K band speed sign facing I-10 east bound travelers in Lake Charles, I passed it. No detection. It had my speed pegged correctly, which makes me wonder if the KA band detection of the Lake Charles cop was constantly on and my detector didn't pick it up.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. By no means am I expecting the same performance of my V1, but this (along with my previous two defective PRO-78 detectors) makes me think this detector and brand are a piece of $@!&. I've lost all faith in this detector and I honestly feel I could drive with nothing and have better protection than this garbage.
I don't know whether to send it in for repair or if this is what should be expected with a detector that costs less than $150.00.
