Default Initial Power-On Self Test necessary?

is the initial test for my pro-78 (and possibly other whistler rd's) necessary?

Mike B once said, its primary purpose is to familiarize the driver with the main alerts (perhaps also to verify the speaker is functioning), but it is not necessary. I have it off on my 1793 because I get too many questions of "WTF is hanging on your windshield?"

Speaking of that, I always say "it's a digital compass", and 75% of the times that excuse shuts them up. One time, my 1793 caught a constant-on Ka band encounter from half a mile away, and my passenger just turned and stared at me.

Ya I turned mine off after about a week. Passengers would always be asking questions, and it definitely got kind of annoying

I didn't really mind the self test on the PRO-73. The process is the same on the pro78/xtr690 except for the added LASER siren during startup. It's the LASER part of the startup that scares the crap out of me every time I start my car. I think it'd be great to have a start-up test be at a fixed low volume (1) regardless of your volume setting. Perhaps this could be added to the software update package as well, Mike?
