Default Whistler XTR-585 detecting Ku band in Vancouver

    Hi Mike,

Another interesting question to ask you.

Recently, I have been detecting several Ku band alerts after re-arming the Ku band detection again following the advise of my friend who had gotten Ku alerts with their XTR-585. On 3 occassions LEOs were around. This is on Knight Street in Vancouver, BC, Canada, especially on Knight and 49th & Knight and Broadway for you Vancouverites.

On 1 occassion, the officer had his gun pointed towards us and my Whistler just went crazy with the Ku band alert. Very troubling, because I was expecting either a K or Ka band alert.

I thought Ku band isn't used in North America at all. Is my Whistler malfunctioning or our cops here testing with Ku guns?

Any insight on this would be much appreciated.

    Thanks..

I'm guessing it's most likely some sort of band misidentification, such as the K/Ka issue with the Pro-73 or the apparent X/K issue with the Pro-78's.

Ku exists on it's own sweep and therefore cannot be confused with X, or K, or Ka.

Very interesting as we have been told there are no Ku guns currently however, you never know.

I will investigate and get back to you.

Ok, this is what I have found out.

    1) There is an experiment running in VC at railroad crossings where a Ku oscillator is being used as a Doppler switch.

    2) There is a Spectre IV being prototyped and tested in VC and it may be possible that the emissions may cause Ku alerts in our radar detectors. I have not had an opportunity to test a Spectre IV so I can not confirm this.

    3) Are there any GSM towers in the area?

I need for our customers in VC to confirm any of this if possible.

Can any one pleasse check out the area of Knight Street in Vancouver, BC, Canada, especially on Knight and 49th & Knight and Broadway and let me know if there are any railroad crossings or GSM towers?

Were any of the Ku alerts in Vancouver Proper?

Michael, hypothetically if Ku band radar guns were discovered in US or Canada tomorrow, would it be possible for the XTR-690 and Pro-78's to receive software updates to detect Ku band, or would that require a new detector?

Ku in the USA will most likely not be a reality for a number if reasons.

A software update will not get you Ku
