XTR 185
I recently purchased a whistler XTR 185 cordless detector and was able to test it today. In our area on my way home, there was this COP who uses a detector that looks like bin0cular. I think that's the one that can take pictures while you are speeding. Anyway, I drove by and my detector did not detected the cop. So I mad a U-turn, and after 3 miles, I drove by him again and no detection. I did this about 8 times and 3 times out of 8, he pulled over speeding drivers. Is my detector broke?

Sounds like he was using Laser! Where is your XTR mounted...high or low? Your detector may not have picked up the narrow beam, or received scatter off of other vehicles....Laser can be very difficult to detect.

Thanks. My XTR is mounted high and my car is lowered. I am pretty sure after reading information on radarveil.com that he is using laser. I'll mount it low tomorrow and see if there will be any difference.

Beyond 3000' laser becomes easier to detect in advance warning situations due to the beam widening. However it is extremely rare for a cop to target that far. His favored choices are anywhere between 300 and 1000 feet, in this case, the beam is far too small and barely scatters to give you any hope of an advance warning.

Well I mounted my XTR-185 lower, drove around again. Anyway, I have a supercharged E39 BMW. So as soon as I made a U-turn, I finally thought, this is cool, I am the first car that cops will see , so I come cruising at 55 on a 50 MPH zone. This subaru WRX came along side so I looked at him and smiled. The dude on the subaru decided to show off and took off. I just said "shoot" there goes my opportunity to detect the laser. The dude on the subaru got the ticket! :P :P :P I give up... maybe some other day.

Sure you will detect the laser, only to have it detect a ticket. Be careful out there.

A radar detector alone is almost worthless when it comes to laser defense. On a good day, you'll get a LASER alert and then get pulled over and handed a ticket. On a bad day, well, you'll just get a ticket.
If you see cops shooting laser a lot in your area, you should really invest in a jammer or even in VEIL. (And yeah, anything that looks like the officer is "aiming" at you or looking through an optical scope is LASER)

IF you get an advance scatter signal, be sure to count all your blessings!
