    Default 690 off-dim mode

    i really love this mode

i figured out a neat trick for myself, i use it in off-dim mode, so basically it looks like it is off all the time but when it detects signal it lights up.

best at night time, cos it is totally dark until it detects signal and lights up blue and dark again once the signal is gone.

Best mode on the XTR-690 in my personal opinion!

    I prefer the dim/brt mode.

Off/Dim and Dim/BRT are great modes -- I "accidentally" put my detector in Dim-BRT mode and loved it ever since. It's good enough to see the compass in DIM (BRT doesn't really help when glare is the limiting factor), and the extra visual of the detector "lighting up" on alerts is good, though IMO still redundant given the wonderful alert periscopes.

i need to turn on the periscopes, i didnt want it all flashing when a cop is behind me.. unnecessary attention grabing for the cop.

Good point -- it is sometimes annoying that the periscopes will attract so much attention. I personally don't care all that much if a cop knows I have an RD. I'm a proud user of one and don't find it a dirty little secret that needs hiding.

true but i think it is illegal to have flashing LED's inside a car in some states, so for me 1 less pain in the ass if i turn it off.

Touché, I didn't factor in state regulations...

I wish there were a DIM/DARK type setting where it would be DIM at night, then when radar is detected, it turns really dim so as to be practically un-noticeable by anyone outside your vehicle. That way no undesired attention is paid to the RD.

Being OFF (no display) when no cops are around is not a concern of mine. I'd rather it be off when alerting so cops don't see my RD, since most frown upon them and would be less likely to cut you a break should you be unfortunate enough to be targeted, pursued, and pulled over. When there's no cops around, who cares who can see or not see my RD.

Well there is a DIM-OFF setting so the display turns off when alerting.

Then you would just have to go by the audible ramp up tho.
