Default [CURIOUS] What are the grooves on the lens for?

Whistler's front lens is kinda unique to me because of its pattern. There's what looks like a convex lens over the laser eye (probably to catch laser scatter better?), and some sort of big indentation over the radar side then a notch between the two sides.

What's the purpose of this? I'm thinking it does something to radar signals, and doesn't just look intriguing?

Can you post a picture of what you are talking about?

i think it is to improve off axis detection... again just a guess.

The slight curve to the plastic directly in front of the radar horn theoretically allows the the plastic to function as a rather weak focusing lens for on-axis radar, whereas the spherical condensing lens in front of the laser receiver does indeed function to focus more laser energy onto the laser receiver in order to increase its sensitivity to laser. Nevertheless, the large yet slight curve in front of the radar horn itself is mostly cosmetic in function.

Actually, the lens in front of the microwave horn can be quite functional at improving sensitivity if done correctly.

Whistler has used lensing in products as far back as the Spectrum in 1981. This continued in prodcts from 1981 thru 1990.

More recently in 1995 with the 1400 series and again in 2002 with the 1700 series and continue with the latest Whistler XTR models.

It works well enough for Bel with the STi to use external lensing, Escort with the 9500i uses external lensing and Cobra added lensing to their products with an internal lens so as not to change their outward appearance.

There are a few other oversea's imports that are also including this as part of their functional design however their results are less than stellar as they appear to have focused on copying the marketing feature rather than the science of performing.

They say mimicking is the highest form of flattery.
