I am new to detectors, but I want an entry-level $30 detector. Which one is better, the Whistler XTR-140 or the Cobra XR-1050? Thanks alot!

How would you come up with the cash to pay for a speeding ticket?Originally Posted by co1063
I would invest that money ($180?) in a Whistler XTR-690 or Bel V Series.
They're available for that sum.
This is funny. My first detector cost $35. I upgraded in 3 days to a $65 detector. A week later, I got a cordless for $150 and then my $200 detector.
Hello! $35 Cobra....2 or 3 weeks later $30 PNI.....2 or 3 weeks later $90 (eBay) Cobra...3-4 weeks later $100 ( really good deal) Bel v955.Originally Posted by asianfire
30 bucks is way to little an amount for a radar if you cant drop triple digits for a Detector than you shouldn't speed for 2 reasons 1. Speeding tickets cost a ton and 2. you burn up way more gas which you wouldn't be able to afford truthfully that 30 bucks would do better in your gas tank than in a detector. Here is what you should do look for a Pro-78 or something in the 200 dollar range and go to google checkout I got my Pro-78 for 140 online and it is a good detector. Good luck with your search.
or end up with a XTR-690 for $100, which performs just as well, only doesn't have as bright a screen.
I can't comment on either of those two models, but I do have experience with a Cobra ESD7000 (was ~$30 when purchased). It was better than nothing... but I wouldn't recommend Cobra products to anyone because they actually set off fellow motorist's radar detectors. By causing false alarms, users have trouble distinguishing a real threat (a cop) from a crappy (aka Cobra) radar detector that is nearby... therefore causing the owner of the good radar detector to lose confidence in his/her equipment.
It's just a messed up thing to do since we're all just trying to accomplish the same goal... receive legitimate warnings of speed radar. In short... using a Cobra makes you an a-hole (like driving at or below the speed limit in the left lane, or driving among traffic with your high-beams on, etc.) so get the Whistler unit!
The ESD 7000 is not bad on straights. It's just horrible on curves or over hills. That's what sets a good detector apart. Well...and decent Ka detection.
