    Default Reviews Pro 58

As usual, not much action as of yet. Did run into a speed sign, and picked up the K band from half a mile away. Not very impressed there, however it has been years since I have used a RD. Maybe these machines fire out weak signals at times. Picked up a K band county mounty(sheriff) this morning, however he was firing in the opposite direction while closing down a lane. After an 1/4 of a mile or under I went around a turn and pretty much lost contact. The big news however, I passed a couple of patrol cars escorting a wide load and my VG2 signal did go off. It went off right when I was even with them and continued to signal for about 8 seconds. That is the only time that icon has alerted, so I believe they do have the VG2 out there searching for RDs in trucks. I suppose that does not help other RD owners either. I might have to turn it off at times, so I am not singled out.
I have not picked up any false alarms at this time. Xband of course is excluded. I passed a Cobra user and I did not report a KA signal.
The INTENSE BLUE DISPLAY, does turn into INVISIBLE BLUE DISPLAY during the day.
I do miss the dial on the Escorts(4600). I also believe the volume could reach higher decibals on the Whistler. My windows were down however, I don't think I can really listen to the radio very loudly. My unit is also placed close to the window.
It is obviously to early to come to a final conclusion. I am excited and nervous about running into some signals. I hope I am not disappointed.

I bought this radar detector right before my trip from home (NJ) to Miami, FL. Saved me 4 times on the way there and a few on the way back at night. One time I actually had slowed down and there was a cop on the side of the road and he knew I was speeding and I slowed down because I detected him. He was so mad he came right behind me to pace me and when he still couldn't catch me speeding he came up on the side of me and grilled me for a good 30 sec. Haha, that was great. This radar detector has excellent X band detection, and good K and Ka detection. The speed reading signs are in fact weak sometimes. I think they are adjustable because there is on in the next town over that is very strong and I pick it up from far away, but usually I don't pick them up that far. I would recommend this radar detector for anyone who doesn't want to spend a lot on a radar detector, but wants a decent one. It is a very good buy for the money. I bought mine for $85 (including shipping) on ebay.

Mount your Pro-58 at the top of your windshield, near your rearview mirror. You will get slightly better range, it will be out of sight of LEOs and theives, and you will be able to see the Intense Blue Display all the time

I visited radartest.com and saw the reviews for detectors under 200$. If the new Whistlers are comparable to the Pro Series, the KA band range was not very impressive. Even, the Cobra was ranked higher in this department  . However, I still have not run into a KA encounter. I will be off to Columbus in the morning.

Just want to inform you guys that the test done by radartest.com uses a 5 mile stretch. given this the Whistlers and cobras are generally 2-3 miles and the bel at 5 miles. What the test does not show you is that under most NORMAL road conditions ie hills, curves, etc....etc... the Bel, Cobra, and Whistlers are all around 1 mile. Furthermore on the around the curve tests the Bel is generally 1/2 mile and the Whistler a bit less. the Cobra usually goes off as you go around the corner. Do the research...the test results are out there.

thank you for the post mike, its good to have a reality check every now and then from somebody who really knows what there talking about. I know people (myself included) take these sml reports as gospel, simply because its the only information (that i can find) out there

My experience so far, is that this thing is not sensitive enough. You may ask, what do you expect for a detector under $100? But, com'n every time the K or Ka goes, its when im like riight next to the cop, which is way too late. I have yet to experience it go off with some time to brake.

It gives me a few sec to brake, I just got out of my first Pulse ticket today, worked great. It may not give a lot of time to slow down, but I've found that if you're alert it gives just enough time to avoid getting caught...
