Hello Whistler board,
I got a new XTR-690 a week ago using reward points from a testing program at my POE. The Pro-78 was not offered as an option. The XTR-185 & 190 were offered as well as the Pro-3450. (And three Cobras too.) Because radar and detection is my hobby I decided to take advantage of trying out a high end Whistler free of charge! I must say for the most part I am very impressed with it. I have spent the past week (300+ miles) getting used to the 690 as it works a bit different from the X-50 I have been using for the past two years. K-band range is slightly less on the 690. However, I had one foreward facing Ka-band encounter with the 690 that was highly impressive. It met or maybe even exceeded the usual range of the X-50. I come across this particular LEO in the same place 1 - 2 times per week. He sits in the same spot with C/O 35.5 Ka. In the past, I turned the voice off on all my Cobras but the voice on the 690 is pleasant enough to leave on. The compass works well. So does the voltage meter once I found out how to enable it. The city modes are cool too. I can only think of two things about it that I would change. I wish it had a DIM-DIM setting. I also wish that X and K didn't share the same sweep. If I get a K-band alert while approaching an X-band false alley, the 690 will hold on to the K alert the entire time the X signal is present even if City 1 or 2 mode is on. I'm not sure if turning off X-band in the menu would fix this. Mike B.? Overall I like the detector.
