I just wanted to post up my experience with a photo radar van and get some feedback on how the Pro 78 worked for others.
I was traveling on I-10 tonight east bound through the Deck Park Tunnel that runs from 7th Ave to 7th St in downtown Phoenix. I was crusing with traffic, and I honestly don't know what the PSL is there (think it is 55mph). I was one lane right of the normal fast lane (two right of the carpool). I was going 65mph which was right in line with everyone else on the road. As I came around the last bend in the tunnel I saw a bright flash of light. I immediately recognized it for what it was, looked to the right side of the road and saw a yellow photo enforcement sign. Not knowing what the speed limit was, I slowed down to 45mph to protect myself from a ticket, but everyone in front of me was also jumping on the brakes and slowing down to at least that speed. 200 or 300 feet from the end of the tunnel, I could see the van sitting behind the wall of the tunnel, on the left side, immediately after you exit the tunnel. It is a very tricky place to park a photo van. About the same time I saw the van, my Pro 78 sounded a K band with 1 bar. As I passed the van, I think it may have jumped to 2 bars for a second, but quickly went back to 1 bar and then stopped alerting about 300 feet after the van. This was my first experience with these vans, and another tricky experience I had a few months back is what convinced my to get a RD. As I watched my mirror after I passed the van, I saw several flashes go off for traffic behind me.
I believe that the position of the van after the tunnel and the fact I was in a tunnel greatly reduced my range, but I guess that is just the logistics of the real world. Hopefully my next experience with one of these will be in an open area that gives me more reaction time to slow down, but I was safe for tonight. What experience have you had with these vans?
