    Default Whistler 1580 speaker defective

Greetings! I am a complete newbie I have a Whistler 1580 which has worked extremely well for 11 years - a really well engineered product.

A couple of weeks ago the audio went silent. Everything else works fine. I investigated and found that the speaker coil has gone open circuit. I checked this by measuring the impedance (complete open circuit) and by substituting a temporary test speaker (which works fine).

Could someone please help me to purchase a replacement speaker? It is a specialist Mylar miniature unit and I cannot readily find it by searching the Internet. I need only the speaker - it is extremely easy to remove / replace.

    These are the specs:
    Type No: DMS3616A
    Impedance: 16 Ohms
    Power: 0.2W
    Diameter: 36mm
    Width: 4.5mm

Only the dimensions and the impedance are important. The power is not important - 0.2 watts or more is fine. In fact the speaker could usefully have been rated at higher power to start with.

I am located in England so I doubt if it's practical to send the complete unit for repair. But as I mention above, the speaker is extremely easy to remove and replace.

    Many thanks
    Philip

A further thought... it doesn't have to be an exact Whistler 1580 speaker - I suspect that several later models have similar or compatible speakers. A replacement will work fine as long as:

    - diameter is roughly 36mm (within a few mm)
    - width is roughly 4.5mm (within a mm)
    - impedance is roughly 16 ohms (within a few ohms)

Perhaps there are spares for later models that may be available?

Perhaps someone has a trashed RD with a speaker that still works?

    Many thanks for any help!

    Hi Philip,

Have you tried either calling or emailing Whistler? Assuming that they still have the speaker model for your 11 year old RD, they might ship you a replacement speaker for a nominal fee plus shipping costs. On the other hand, don't you think that it really is time to upgrade to a more modern radar detector with more performance?

Many thanks for your help! I have tried searching the Internet for Whistler's contact details but cannot find anything. Does anyone know? OTOH I understand that Michael B on this list has been very helpful - perhaps he could help with this?

Replacement: yes, logical. But it works perfectly except for one simple and quick repair. It looks like they may ban RDs in the UK in the near future (they are already banned in France) so now may not be a good time to splash out on something new and expensive. I am at the stage in my life where I am slowing down rather than speeding up. Plus, I enjoy fixing things! :-)

    Thanks
    Philip

Just wanted to close this thread. My Whistler 1580 is back working just like new thanks to Michael B who very kindly and generously sent me a new speaker and didn't even ask for the postage. It doesn't get better than that - what a great guy!

Thanks very much to everyone who responded.
