I thought I'd share my impressions in switching from an xtr-330 to a V1.
I've owned my Whistler xtr-330 for about a year now. I've been pretty happy with its detection abilities, but after reading this forum and having no basis for comparison, I felt as though I was missing out on some great range. My dad wanted an RD, so I gave him my xtr-330 and set about looking for a new one.
I was about to buy a pro-78 or 695, but a local on craig's list was selling his old V1 for $100. I upgraded it with VR for another $150, so I ended up getting a bran new V1 for $250, which isn't bad.
After two months of using it, I can't say that I've seen a big difference in detection range. The V1 has great detection. But now that I compare it to my xtr-330, well, the 330 had great detection as well. I drive the same route everyday in Indiana on highway 37, and I know where the LEO's hide, and where I regularly get alerts. Maybe I need more sample time. That said, I would not spend $400 on a V1 (I am happy with it at $250). The directional arrows are nice... but the 330 was a GREAT detector at only $50.
Thought I'd share that... maybe the V1 will impress me yet, but I just haven't seen this "day and night" impression I've been getting from reading these forums.
I will tell you that I have been very happy with my Pro 78 out in the real world. Now that I have a 695 I will let you guys know my impressions in the next few days

Re: xtr-330 to V1. Not seeing a big difference.
Betty,
Thanks for sharing your experience with the V1 compared to the XTR330. I gave a Whistler 1734 after purchasing my Pro58 and Pro78. The friend I gave the 1734 to has had many saves and continues to use it. From what I have experienced from Whistler all of their detectors have good detection capabilites even the lower priced units. Since Whister has changed over ti the XTR line for most of their detectors the upgraded units have better filtering to minimize false alerts. With that said, their products are much better rhan what Cobra has to offer. It's good to know that your V1 experience bears this out about Whistler- great detectors at great prices.
yes as far as I ma concerned there is only the following:
VR
Bel
Escort
Whistler

gotta love whistler. both of mine have great range the pro 78 just seems more ontop of filtering and falses

Last week we vacationed in NH and we had an opportunity to test our new xtr-330 and I must say that it seemed to work flawlessly. Every false alert was expected (only a few) and as it turned out, most of the LEO's we passed were not running radar at the time.
Is the XTR 330 based on the same platform as the Pro 78/XTR690/XTR695?

I continue to hold the same view - and there are some things I miss about the xtr-330: Mainly the very different alert beeps for each band, and the different color alerts. When I look up at my V1 at night to see which alert is coming on, it is just another red dot. Unless I hear the alert (after I memorized the slight difference between K and X), I can't tell the difference. On the xtr-330 on the other hand, each band has a different color, and a radically different tone.
That said, the arrows are really useful on the V1. It's not that I would go back to the 330, but were I to buy a new one, the 330 would be in my sights, or else another whistler like the 78 or 695. I wish GOL did some tests with the 330 to see how it stacked up against the others.
There are areas of false alerts that I pass by everyday, the CVS K-band automatic doors for example. My xtr-330 would alert at EXACTLY the same spot as my V1 does. And I take this route twice every single day - always the exact same result with the V1. My wife still has the 330, and it is confirmed every time.
On Ka, since I only encounter instant on, it's harder to tell how different they are, but again, i haven't been blown away by the V1, yet.
