We could have XTR-695 performance, features... with the addition of XTR-560 customizing features:
1) Programmable Text Display
2) Programmable Audio Tones
3) Backlight Setting
Obviously, some are more practical than others... but regardless, the main point of this thread - why did Whistler drop these particular capabilities?
I, for one, would certainly have appreciated #'s 2 and 3 listed above. #2 would appease those passengers who aren't as fond of the BEEPs and BRAPs as you or me, while the lack of #3 was a real disappointment for me since you lose all that flexibility of tailoring the display. I would love to have my RD display remain all blank at night during normal conditions, then dimmly light up with a Green alert for X-band, Blue for K-band, and Red for Ka-band. That way, I could even go without audio completely (again, to appease passengers) yet still have alert information conveyed to me in a very clear, noticeable manner. DARK mode is not very practical... especially on the XTR-695 with the addition of RSID and LSID.
Would reviving those features be as simple as a firmware upgrade? Obviously #2 would require the presence of a mic, but #1 and ESPECIALLY #3 shouldn't require any different or additional hardware, correct?
