New here, just posted in the introduction forums. I pre-ordered a 690SE last night. Just looking for some more insight. I drive a 2007 Audi A3 3.2s Quattro mostly highway. I live in WI and do most of my driving around the cities of West Bend/Germantown/Menomonee Falls/Milwaukee/Brookfield/Mequon/Glendale. I do run into State Troopers as well. Does anyone know what is in use here? Is the 690SE a good fit? What about mounting location in the Audi?
This sticky basically tells you what your town uses. Just look under your state and find your town. In Wisconsin it looks like they use K, Ka, I/O ka and laser. No detector can protect you from laser. If you are gung ho about not getting a ticket you may want to take a look at laser jammers. Overall, I believe you made the right choice.

If I can't manage to sneak a laser jammer purchase past her (my spending limit for the RD is $275), would Veil be appropriate in the interim?
Veil works extremely well to reduce your car's lidar signature. Straight from the Veil Guy himself -- a very light yet even coat of Veil works just as well as heavier coats of Veil. One forum members posted that a painter's sponge brush works very well for applying an even yet light and hardly noticeable coat of Veil.
BTW, your 690SE should perform very well for your driving conditions.

What's the suggested application of veil on a black audi a3 with no front license plate? Or should I move this question over to the veil forum? Here's a pic of a black a3: http---://i43.tinypic.com/10qevc6.jpg

Based upon what I've seen in testing on my car, which is heavily Veiled, Veil by itself isn't much protection, for a couple of reasons.
1) Without my jammers on, I can easily obtain basically instantaneous reading against my car. Now, your LIDAR profile should be lower than mine, considering your car's shape and body style, but I would suspect that most of the time, with any shot under about 1000ft, your reading will be obtained before your foot hits the brake pedal.
2) There are many, many examples on here where someone gets tagged by laser and their RD never notifies them and even more times it's too late. The V1 has by far the best laser detection of any RD out there and I can easily tag my car's front license plate anywhere under 500ft and not set off its laser alert.
Basically, you'd be relying on something that's not reliable.
I'm a big proponent of Veil. Veil takes a mediocre jammer and turns it into a real performer. I have videos on Youtube that prove this beyond a shodow of a doubt. But I do not recommend anyone rely on Veil and a RD for laser protection. If you're going to speed in an area that uses laser, you need a laser jammer.
