So I am interested in purchasing the whistler pro 3450 for several reasons, but wanted to get some other people opinions first.
Mainly I am interested in the unit because it has a remote mount laser detector at a reasonable price. The problem I see with many dash/windshield mount detectors is that the laser sensor is often times too far away from the front license plate and/or headlights for it to be able to accurately detect the small beam of police lidar guns.
The fact that the 3450 has a remote mount laser detector attracts me because I think it could be advantageous to mount this sensor somewhere near the front of the car around the license plate. However, if I am not mistaken the sensor is meant to be mounted on the windshield inside that car (who thought that was a good idea?) which leads me to believe that it is not weather proof. Does anyone have any experience with this unit to confirm this? If so, I am sure there is some way to modify it to seal up any openings that water might get into. I have taken apart my car more times than I can count so installation should be a cake walk.
Also I have read that the radar detection with this unit falls in the "just okay" category, and I am wondering if this has something to do with the suggested extremely low mounting location of the detector. I am wondering if this unit would perform better if the radar sensor was mounted higher on the car like on the front dash board. It would also get much better rear detection with less metal to get in its way.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
The price is really attractive for this unit. $180 on amazon seems like a steal for all that it offers.
Thanks in advance,
