looking for a good budget detector to replace my cobra. I am looking at the xtr140 vs. xtr330. i do not want to spend over $70. so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great!!

I'm going to tell you honestly you can't afford to speed.
Your range is like asking me which will protect me better from an bullet a piece of paper or a plastic. Sorry.
If you're only going 5-10 you really don't need a fuzzbuster.
$150 refurbished 8500 is the cheapest I can recommend without myself feeling bad.

I have the Whistler XTR-330. It is a decent detector. I normally stay within 5 mph city, 10 highway. As for the detection it works well when letting you know you've been pinged, and gives you some warning. I have seen better radar detectors and hope to move on to something better when I get a job.
Hope this gave you some insight into your decision.
For budget detectors both are good detectors. We've had some good reviews on the xtr330 and some positive comments on the xtr140. They will do okay against constant on, but cheaper detectors really struggle against constant on radar. I'd personally go with the xtr330 myself.
I would go with a Pro 78 Rev C ...
I say skip cheap because it gives you a false sense of security.
XTR-140 is OK against K band and X band, it's not really going to help much on Ka band unless you're on the highway driving in a straight line and not speeding. Off axis... instant on... forget it.
Can't comment on the XTR-330 but basically any budget Whistler is not going to do the job. Get a Pro 78 or an Escort 8500 if you wish to save money, they're the cheapest you can get with any reasonable protection.
I own the XTR330 and it is a really sensitive detector for the money. I would recommend the XTR330 if you absolutely can't afford the XTR690\695, Pro78 or SE series detectors.
i guess i need to quit being a penny pincher and get rid of my cheap RD's and get the escort 8500.
does anyone know if the trade-up program through escort applies to the $150 models on ebay?
I think Escort's trade in program only applies to brand new models on their website.
