    Default Upgraded from XTR-330 to Pro-78SE

    Well, as the title suggests, I'm placing my XTR-330 on the shelf and bought myself a new Pro-78se. I haven't had too much time to do testing with it today but it sure seems to be a lot chattier than the 330.

    I'm in a suburb (Tacoma Metro area). On filter 0/1 it seemed to pick up itself in constricted allies, either that or 4 different cars had RD's lol. I switched it onto Filter 2 and it doesn't even alert to half of the K band door's the 330 would. I don't know if I should be scared or not lol. Either way I'm going to give it a week or so to get a good feel for it.

    My current settings:
    Auto Dim=ON
    Test=ON
    X-band=ON
    K-band=ON
    Ka=MaxID
    LASER=LSID
    SR=ON (I've seen it used where I live)
    VOICE=ON
    POP=OFF
    BATT SAVER=OFF
    FILTER=filter2
    LED (periscopes)=Blinking

    Oh, and I can easily test KA now... If i turn on my 330 my 78se alerts to 33.8 for a minute
    **I do not run both RD's at the same time.

    also remember that the se series and by that most expense whistlers have much better filtering for doors, Mike B form whistler indicated that if it sees multiple signals and they are close together it will ignore them because most likely they are doors. I have a walgreens by my house and normally it does not alert to it at all but one day it alerted early and by golly it was a leo running x band, and after the leo passed it alerted to the doors because the filter had been bypassed.

    There's an area on one of the main city highways here where i get random X-band alerts with every RD i've used including the 9500ix when i had it.

    When i first tried out my 78se i didn't get that expected alert. Thought it might be broke. So the next time i went by that area, i used my 695 which had always alerted in that area. Bingo, the 695 alerted as usual!
    Decided to pack up the 78se to ship it back and use my 695 in the mean time. The next day while passing this same area, the 695 did NOT alert.
    Went by that area a few times to be sure. No alerts.
    WTF is going on?
    Unpacked the 78se and installed it in my vehicle. Purposely went by that area again. The dam thing alerted X-band loud and clear.

    That X alert is sometimes there and sometimes not. Can't say why. Don't know if its a flaky door opener, a uWave transmission tower about a mile away operating intermittently, atmospheric conditiones, etc..

    Also had similar intermittent K-band alerts with every RDer i've used at a local WallyWorld door opener. Sometimes, they'd alert, sometimes NOT. While other store's door openers always alert 100% of the time just like clock work.

    Highway mode is/was enabled in all my RDers all the time meaning there was no 'Filter' variable involved with all this.

    Geuss what i'm trying to say, its been my experience door openers and other non-LEO radar sources 'can' be unreliable when evaluating a RDer especially if its got decent filtering features.

    Do you have city or highway mode on?

    I keep it on Highway mode, I never liked looking at the text and seeing City

    I've gone past this point a few times to get to work. It has a slight hill, walls on both sides of the road, and no stores to create a false. Is it possible that a RD can set itself off? It alerts to KA9, no frequency. and will keep alerting intermittently until I get over the hill and onto another street. (I've only passed this place with Filter & Filter 1, I was going to take a long Sunday drive today and test Filter 2 as well today).

    Also, when a KA9 alert happens is it normally another RD?

    I fixed it. All I had to do was turn Ka MaxID to regular RSID.
    I tested it on all filters with KA MaxID on and the result was the same (KA9 Falsing)
    I tested it on all Filters with KA RSID and silence.

    Has anyone had similar falsing before?

    Yes Ka max is very sensitive to Ka sources. I have Ka max id on and run filter 1 and is about 80% quiet on falses in most of the area. In my honest opinion Ka max would be more use full on the Highway/Interstate than in the city. Wal-mart door openers are now pixel video motion detectors instead of radar. Some door openers don't emit radar all the time and i notice this while driving through a strip mall. I have also noticed Ka max can false on radio/cell towers and satellite dish.

    Yeah as i mentioned earlier, i noticed this too with certain stores.
    There could be valid reasons for this. Obstructions like cars or a lot of people in front of the door opener, the door opener itself is broke, the door opener freq. drifted out of band due to temperature flucutations or the frequency is just marginally in band.

    Don't know anything about door openers but my gut feeling is that those door openers are probably not capable of being calibrated nor do they really need to hold a precise freq. tolerance, they're only door openers. And are probably sealed throw away black boxes at that.

    Incore, if you travel Highway 18 between the Green River exit and the Covington exit you will get a stretch of road there that will alert to X band for along period of time. I have experienced this with 3 different Whistlers the Pro78, XTR695 and the Pro78. I leave X band off when running either the XTR 695 or the Pro78SE. Good luck with the new unit.

    ive noticed that small airfields running radar will or will not give off alerts depending on wind directions that affect which sides aircraft land on the air field. i know for sure of one small private airstrip that will drive my rd's bonkers on certain occasions, and a day later will not alert at all
