    Default whistler 1730 help!

alright....i got a whistler 1730 on sunday.......i put it in my moms van since thats what we got it in.....we did a 20 mile drive home.....worked fine....never went off except when a cop passed on the highway......THEN........

i put it in my car.......now it keeps going off like every 5 to 10 secs........i dont have a cigarette lighter in my car so i bought one....stuck the positive to the cigarette fuse........the ground to a ground.......i tried even changing grounds didnt work...even changing the positive to a different fuse it still didnt work....so i put it back in my moms van....went around the block(usually went off about 5 times in my car) didnt go off once in her van......i have no clue what it could be.........

it cant be the radar cause it works fine in my moms van......

Wow, a lot of this coming up lately.

Check the voltage with a volt meter. If it's 12 or better, you need a noise filter. Search the forum for "filter capacitor" posted by me.

Check it at the lighter socket you installed.

well i just said f*** it.........i disconnected the lighter......then i cut the cigarette adapter on the power wire and just connected the positive to the battery(with a fuse inbetween) and then the ground to a ground.......so we'll see how that works

well.......now it only goes off when i semi step oon the gas.....not floor it just kinda step on it and then when it revs up to like 4000 it just goes off.....it aint got nothin to do with my distributor cap cause i just got a new one.......

Best thing would be a mylar film capacitor. You need one with a value of about 470 microfarad, and at least 25 volt capability. You can use a different type of capacitor if they don't offer mylar. If you get one that's polarized, be certain to install it correctly, they can blow up if they don't. The mylar and ceramic capacitors aren't polarized, so those are the safest if this is new to you.

Just install it with one lead soldered or otherwise connected to the +12 source for your detector, and one to the ground for your detector. Use the SAME ground that your detector is connected to, not just some random place on the body.
