    Default Whistler Pro 78se 34.7Ka 12/12/2010 (videos)

Just a couple radar detections I recorded yesterday driving on SR14 in Palmdale, CA.

The first one is one of those often seen c/o 34.7Ka from a on-coming CHP cruiser:

This second video is also a typical often seen freeway on-ramp CHP speed trap:

I'm getting much more vigilant when I approach on-ramps or big curves now days driving in SoCal. Then, there are also those nimble moto cops sneaking up from the rear.

Yeah, I could have tried. But they often don't stay put long enough for me to come back around.

pretty nice range! Ramp up on those whistlers must be interestingly quiet. My Escort would be screaming at me by the time I got that close to the source

My prediction for the 2nd one would be if mikeslc went to film forward facing he would catch a very close call encounter with only 2-3 seconds of reaction time before passing through the radar beam.

This reminds me of something earlier today. I had a local with C/O come up pacing from behind, it took like 5 mins for him to reach me, and by the time he did we hit dense traffic and he happended to be the car right behind me...my Whistler was screaming for like 10 minutes as we moved extremely slowly through the traffic...I ended up muting it after ~1 minute, it was too annoying, but that has to be the longest it has been on full alert, speakers probably would have blown if I didn't mute it.

It does seem like my Pro 78se needs pretty strong radar signal to get it to go full Ka9 alert. Sometimes it never reaches full alert when you would think it should. But, most of the time it does ramp up rather well. Making it pretty easy to predict how far or close the radar source is.

Yes, I would agree forward facing detection in that situation would most likely be pretty bad. I have seen anything from no alert until passing the leo, to more than 10 to 20 seconds of warning when passing those on-ramp speed traps in the past. Many variables can affect how well my Pro 78se would perform in detecting forward facing radar sources. Large metal road signs are always good and the more cars that are ahead of me seems to help reflect the radars signals too. Overall, I would say my Pro 78se is not good at forward facing radar detection in most situations.

As far as forward facing detection also the higher the mount, the higher off the ground of the vehicle, the better. This is one reason i shy away from remote units which are typically mounted a foot or two off the pavement. IMO, I'd think one of those low mounted remote antennas especially in a low profile sports car in heavy bumper to bumper traffic would have a hell of a time detecting forward or any direction radar. I'd consider a remote for my Jeep mounted high as possible but not for my low profile car.

mikelsc, my 78SE pegs all the time with nearby and opposite passing 'divided lane' LEOs occassionally even with the LEO a 100 or more yards away.
    Maybe a MB tuneup???
    or
I don't know if radar gun's power can typically be adjusted in the field to make em more stealthier. If so, maybe CA LEOs use lower power settings for their radar guns??
