Been out of the loop for 15 years. After researching detectors under $200 I narrowed it down to Bel and Whistlers. Was leaning to Bel since it was the only brand that I had ever owned, but I got drawn in by the Ka Max mode and all of the videos on Youtube. (No disrespect to my old Bel, it was a great detector and saved me multiple times) All of the SE's (690SE,78SE, and 695SE) are basically the same detector but I ended up getting the 695SE because of all of the features and the ability to have each alert a different color.
I did drive around with it for a few days to test it out. Thanks to this forum, I knew some initial settings to make. I set if for Highway, Filter, Ka MaxID, LSID, SWS off, and POP off. I have a pretty short commute to work and back so I didnt really get much action. I drove around for 4 days and the only alerts I got were Walgreens, a Burger king (odd), and a couple of grocery stores. I really dont mind those going off, because I can see how consistent the range is. Also, with auto mute, it was not too much of an annoyance. Other than that, the 695SE was really quiet. Almost too quiet. On the 5th day I turned down a 25mph street on the way to pick up my kids and before I completed the turn, it alerted (in all of the excitement, I dont remember if it was X or K band - I think K but not positive). It had to be something, because it had never gone off the previous 4 days in that location. Also, there are no big business in the area. As I get closer, the alert gets stronger. About half of mile I had to turn off and pick up the kids. I get back on and the alert is still going off. I continue down and about half mile later there is a speed sign. The next day I mapped it out and the distance, was about a mile (.9 actually). Very acceptable range even for a speed sign.
That was all the action I had for a week. After that, I put it in my wife's car. I was really concerned about the false alerts, but the only ones I had were the ones mentioned above. I did not have any false alerts from other detectors. I also did not have any weird alerts in the middle of nowhere. I was really surprised how quiet it was even on the filter setting. The 695SE seems like a really good mid priced detector. We'll see how it performs.
