Oh yeah, big improvements. What is the version number of the one that you bought?

For about $90.00 more you could buy a brand new unit directly from Valentine......

Sorry but your $35.00 V1 doesn't appear to be that much of a bargain

:?

$90 plus the "upgrade" of 280 which is about 370, or what VR will charge for a returned unit with shipping.

Sell it on ebay for $300.

MSRP for a V1 $399.00.
You already spent $35.00 plus you'll need $280.00 in upgrades
total $315.00.

$399.00 - $315.00 = $84.00

Sometimes Valentine has new "out of box" units that are discounted so you can get one cheaper than $399.00

Sooooooo...........your "buddy" didn't really do you any favours

I'm not seeing the problem with getting a V1 for $35. That's an insanely good deal on a working unit of any age. As has already been mentioned you can sell it on ebay and probably get at least $200 for it. That's half the cost toward a brand new unit!

put your serial number in here:

see what the cost is, and if it's worth it to you, go ahead and update.

no it's fine. Many people prefer the 1.7 to the 1 4/5.

so whats the real difference between 1.8 and 1.7?? POP mode, and improved K-Ka-Laser modes? or they are the same???

V1.8 POP2 has better Ka performance, laser detection, but the 1.7 has better filtering

1.7 has no filtering (at least on k band), just not as sensitive so it wont go off to everything

ok, let me ask in other way: does it worth getting new one (either upgrading the one I got, or selling on ebay, and getting new one), or I can still ride with this for another year or two??? and plus do I have to get a new concealed display, or they all the same?

Sethy there is a fine line between filtering and sensitivity

Also how can you make that statement? Have you owned a V1 1.7? I have. Have you talked to Mike V or designed helped design the v1.7? What facts do you have to back up that claim? I had a V1 1.7 for about two years before I upgraded it. If you read Bob's review the V1 1.7 a lot of the times would go off at about the same time as the others yet it would false less than the 1.8. Bob can add to this.

To answer the question about is it worth upgrading to 1.8 I would say keep the V1.7. It is a pretty good detector and one that some people would like to have instead of the 1.8

I had a 1.7 V1 w/ no rear laser detection. I threw it on ebay and got just over $250 for it. I turned around and bought a new one 1.8 w/ Pop2 for just $150 out of my pocket plus the $250 I got for the older one.

I probably didn't have to buy a new one. I guess I wanted to more than anything. Prior to the 1.7, my first V1 (no idea what version) did not have band indicator and again only front laser. I did the upgrade for $200 I think.

To me it made better sense to put the 1.7 on ebay and buy a new one rather than upgrade.

I have talked to VR, and they say that there is no filter on K band on their 1.8 model. So I doubt they would have it on their 1.7 model

Closest thing to a filter on K band is the mutes and delays.

It all depends who you talk to at VR. I called them up and they told me that "L" mode effects all bands which is not correct

At this point I prefer my 1.7 over the 1.8 I had a few months ago. The main problem was with it picking up multiple K band signals on a single K band alert.
RacerX and Jim have had these same problems and I wish Mike would address these issues.
When I compared both the 1.7 and 1.8 for three weeks they seemed exactly the same at picking up radar. Laser was more sensitive on the 1.8 as it picked up laser cruise control which I don't believe my 1.7 will pick up however I noticed my 1.7 picked up laser falsing from the side better (two of the six laser diodes at an angle)
Also when using K band automuting the 1.7 was quieter (slightly bigger threshold)

I will say that one of the things that I LOVED about my RD850 was that it was silent and 90% of the time when it did go off it was a cop. The only problem that I had with the RD850 was the range was not to par with the big three. So there is a trade off. The RD850 BY FAR was the quitest detector I have EVER owned.

Orxan4ik,
What types of radar/laser threats are in your area? Will you be using it around town, open highway, road trips ,etc.. If this version detects everything you need it to, you may not need to upgrade right now.

If that has the phone plug style cord, then the Concealed display will work with it. It's only the pre 1997 single wire adapters that don't work with it, unless you get an additional adapter part.

One more thing, if you do upgrade now, does that give you a new warranty with a free upgrade option? That i don't know, either someone here does, or you can check with VR and ask/email them.

Oh, and what you paid for it, you can easily recoup ( including buying a concealed display that you can keep) by ebaying it later on if you wanted.
