View Full Version : For god's sake turn off your VG-2 detection!

Cobra users -- if you are using a cobra, please do all the other detector users a favor and shut off VG-2 alerts (consult your manual)...

Doing so will greatly reduce K/Ka falsing caused by your detector's design...

Spread the message :D

Is that why some Cobras set off my RDs but not all of them? It only causes falses if VG2 is on?

I own both a Whistler and a Cobra, and my side-by-side testing showed:

(1) With VG2 on (factory default), there is a constant Ka/K signal leaking from the Cobra

(2) With VG2 off, there is no longer that constant leak. Once every 10 minutes or so, on a random basis, I'll get a sudden strong Ka alert (sometimes triggering the PULSE alert on the Whistler) which disappears almost immediately.

So, bottom line, it's substantially better with VG2 off, but I don't think it completely solves the Cobra leakage problem.

That would explain my PULSE alert the other day with no LEO in sight. Probably passed a Crapra user.

Not all the Cobra rd's can have the VG-2 off. I know my ESD 7000 can't be turned off.

Same with the ESD-8200, but it's one of the lowest models that most people don't have.

Do you have POP turned on? I tried testing my STI with a Uniden and Attowave unit and didn't get any falses.

I tried picking up a friend's STI from my RDD (remodified RD) and I couldn't. It wouldn't even set off the STi :( .

It's true, what everyone's been saying about the Cobra detectors.

I pulled up at work the other day, and as I was parking the car I got a sudden burst of full-strength K-band that slowly faded away. Since the parking lot was near an interstate I thought it was just a cop passing by or approaching. It happened again but I didn't see anything.

I was getting out of my car to go inside and, wait, could it be? It is. A Cobra radar detector, turned on, hanging from the windshield of the car next to me. Maybe that was it.

Oh, and it wasn't a cheap Cobra. This was one of their 12-Band models.

Roughly recalling what a Whistler tech told me, the only way to filter out the Cobra K/Ka false is to not alert on signals that last > 67 ms pop and < ~.3 sec or so. However, this means that the detector won't go off if a LEO is "quick-trigger"-ing. I have no idea how common that practice is, but I'd rather err on the side of caution!

Definately use the side of caution!
