I dont know why anyone would want to turn off X band- It is still being used in some areas. I know some people like to be trendy and play with programming but running without full alert is in my opinion foolish. You purchased a RD so you could be alert to your surroundings. I run my V1 in the "A" mode because I want to know whats out there. Someone mentioned that he preferred white but was buying a black truck so as to be less visible to laser. Laser is the last thing I think about when buying a large item like that. There are products that block or semi block laser. Having a black vehicle in southern Arizona in the summer is nonsense.

I turn X-band off only because I KNOW that in the area in which I drive does not use X-band. If I drive in unfamiliar territory, X-band goes back on.

Around here where I am, I know the cops don't use Xband because this is a semi-rich county, that and I know some people who are on the dark side (lol). The only time I turn xband on, is when I'm traveling on highways such as the i-10 where there is nothing for miles, so almost all the alerts are valid, however between california and arazona, little to no cops use xband because of the interference it gets. Driving on the i-10, you'll get an xband alert for miles at a time, full on alerts and there is nothing there.

Door openers, garages, stores. It's nuts and will drive you to want to chuck yoru detector out the window. When i go on trips I turn it back on though, because you never know.

True, but I can also see his point. If I lived in Southern Arizona, I wouldn't want a dark colored vehicle either.

I should clarify about running all the time on V1 "A" mode- I live in rural Arizona but on those occasions that I do go to a city, I use the "L" or the "l" mode to cut down but not eliminate X band alerts. Also laser isnt used in my part of the state so laser is a total non-issue. If I do go to a city, I let my RD alert me to laser. With population density (cars and people) it would be hard to speed in a city so once again laser is a non-issue. In all my years of using a RD with laser capabilities, I have had 1 laser alert on I-10 in Deming, New Mexico and I saw the cop when my laser detector went off. lol wasnt speeding then either. Drive safely and happy motoring. On 6/3/05, I sent my V1 in for a free upgrade from software version 3.818 to 3.819 to fix the "J" alert problem. Cant wait to get it back. In the meantime I am using an older bulkier (1.7?) V1.

When I moved from CA to FL, I drove part of the trip on I-10. Out west it's very flat, and I was surprised at some of the distances I was getting on the door openers at gas stations and stores. You'd see a sign for the next exit 1 mile or more, and start getting an alert that would build until you passed the exit. The sideways arrow would light up, and then the back arrow would be on for a while after you passed the exit.
Most hotels and stores around here don't cause an alert until you get close. The wide open spaces must really help the signal travel.

Agreed. So far I've had no problems with X band turned off. The K and Ka detection, in my opintion, has benefited from no X band detection.
Upon travelling outside of the surround counties, the X band would be turned on. Remember, the majority of radar shot is K and Ka. :D

I turn mine off too. We don't have X band guns over here.
