I was heading down the highway the other day and my X50 went into "Self Cal" mode. I assume this is some kind of calibration mode, but what exactly does it do, and why then and not any other time? I got tired of waiting for it and reset the power. It's worked fine after that.

Can anyone shed some light on this mode?

Although I don't have an X50 (yet) it sounds like your power cord may have vibrated or lost connection with the socket and powered back up. Did you notice if the power was applied all the time?

I believe if its not running at 14.5 volts it will also go into cal tests

Hmm, it runs at 13.8 volts most of the time. It could have been a loose cord.

So what it gets a glitch and tries to deal with it ?

You need to call Escort. My second X50 went into self cal mode more than twice. Escort told me to send it in for repair.

Thanks, if it happens again I'll drop them a call.

You should probably call them as soon as possible. They told me to call if it ever goes into self cal mode, even if it's only once.

From what I have been told, it is not uncommon for a unit to go into SelfCal. It is when it does not come out of SelfCal that can be a problem.

Factors that could cause this (so I have been told)
Voltage spike, extreme heat, vibration (cord becoming lose)

Turn the detector off and back on. Watch the unit during the self test on start-up. If you get another selfcal error then time to return it for service..

It worked fine after I power cycled it.

That's a good observation you made. And i appreciate it as I'm sure other X50 owners will also (even though I don't yet). And with the other recommendation(s) from stealthJamal and Roy, it give me something to look out for should I go that route. Please keep us posted if it hapens again...BTW - did you buy an extended warranty? are you still in your 1st 30 days?

No, it's not under warranty anymore. Well it's going on I guess about a year old. I never looked to see how long the warranty was/is.

Overall I love the unit, never had any problems at all. So when this "Self Cal" thing came up it was a bit of a shock. We'll see if it ever happens again. I don't think it's the voltage, as 13.8 volts is exactly where your car should be at, 14.5 would be a bit much for extended periods. I suspect the vibration and or loose cord.

Will let everyone know if I have any future issues.

If I recall, you purchased in this past summer, so it is still under warranty. Let me know if you have the problem again and I will see what I can do...
