On the left-hand side of the x50, there is a small 'window' that looks back. What is the purpose of this? There is no rear detection on the x50, right? Any radar from the back has to be reflected off something up ahead for the detector to see it?

I thought the detector works best when mounted high. But this takes away from laser detection. Is there a happy medium?

Thanks.

i detector detects radar well when mounted high but laser is such a small beam that it won't even hit the laser senor if mounted high most of the time

The little rear window on the X50 is a rear laser sensor. Radar coming from the rear has to be reflected back into the front opening, but laser is detected from the rear using the little window. Don't give it a whole lot of trust though, chances are *if* you pick up a rear laser hit, it's going to be on your car.

The thing circled in red: X50 does not have 2 antennas. It is simple a window the catch radar from the rear from a reflected diode inside.

Look at the diagram on the manual(pg 4& 5):

It does nothing for radar, it's a rear laser port that receives laser signals from behind the vehicle.

Guess I dont know my X50 like I should. I thought it was the rear radar sensor. How do they claim it has 360 degree protection then?

It is a lie just like them saying the 8500 is able to be upgraded should any future threat come up. The X50 came out and the 8500 couldn't be upgraded unless you sold it on ebay and then upgraded by buying a new X50.

Like the 11 band Cobra? No such thing as 11 bands

The X50 will provide fine performance from the rear with radar, radar bounces around like mad, and as long as there's anything for it to reflect off of, you will get an alert.

This is the rear radar detection test done on the 8500.

That's the 8500, not the 8500 X50

He said that is the rear radar detection test on the 8500, meaning there is better performance on the X50!

Yeah its for rear laser. From what I have read it seems that for the most part when you get a laser signal and most likely you probably wont anyways, that its just telling you to pull over. You just got a ticket. I've mounted my X50 as high as possible above the rear view mirror. I actually got some good info on the V1 site about laser and detector placement. Placing high will give you a chance to pick up a reflection but wont help you if your car is hit directly. If im hit directly with laser, its a ticket. I suppose the same is true for rear laser. If you are getting hit from the rear its another ticket in waiting. I saw on the jammer tests site when laser was pointed at the front license plate and headlights the detector couldnt see it anyway. Perhaps Chris could tell us where the detectors were mounted during those tests?

but laser detection on an X50 isnt nearly as good as the V1

Optimum Laser detection mounting:
V1- high
All the rest - Low
