I have a ComRadar Corporation Fox XK radar and I am trying to find out how old it might be. Also, would like to know if it might be of value? It has two clear prongs sticking out of one end about 3.5 inches long. Anyone that might be familiar with this type of radar please let me know anything you might have on it. I can provide a picture of it, just let me know and I will email it. It is in good condition. TIA

I had one in the early/mid 1980's ('83-'85). It was my first detector.
As far as value, you could use it as a paperweight, or as a piece of modern art :wink:
The longer plastic prong was for X-band, the smaller for K-band.
The detector is pre-superheterodyne, so it would have performance far worse than even the poorest detectors of today.
I do remember the single red led that alerted, and the squelch knob (just like a CB radio.)

This is a very old non-superhetrodyne radar detector from the late 70's/early 80s. It will have very poor sensitivity compared to modern superhetrodyne radar detector, and will also suffer more from out-of-band false alerts.
I definitely wouldn't depend on this type of detector for protection. But it might be cool as a collectible or conversation piece.

Thanks for the replies. The one I have is just like the one in the picture but my looks new. I was searching the web and I believe they installed these in the 69 Jaguars. Must be a collectible or just a piece of junk, depends on the person. Like they say, one man's junk is another's treasure.

Back in the day of constant on X-band, this unit gave enough protection not to get a ticket. I can't tell you exactly how far (it's been 20 years) but it saved me too many times to count.
When K band was introduced, I remember literally being on top of the cop before the radar detector went off....

I don't really don't know but my GF thinks they are interesting. Not sure what she meant by that. Maybe I can use it to detect when she's approaching. :)

This was my first radar detector as well. I graduated college in 1986, and I had this well before then. So I put in in the 1983-1984 time period.
The squelch knob was used to adjust sensitivity. Today you have a horn to received the signal, those prongs were antennas that received the radar signal.
It falsed so much that I would actually have it turned off, and sure enough one day I got pulled over.
Brings back memories thoug. :o

Click "Profile" at the top of the screen. Then scroll to the bottom where it says "Upload Avatar" and upload a picture that meets the criteria.

LOL! I had one of those too. It was actually worse than the passive Micronta (Radio Shack) Road Patrol XK!!! I think the only radar it would give long warning of is the old Kustom MR-7 high power X band radar, and even then it may be questionable!

Micronta? :lol: The only reason I remember THAT name is b/c that was the label they used on their pocket microscope! :lol: You couldn't be a nerdy kid in the 80's without one of those. :lol:

A friend gave me one of those back in 1990 and it was useless. I put it away until Escort offered a $30 trade in allowance for a new detector in 1992 or 1993 on any trade-in. I thought I was being really sly by sending that one in for trade. :twisted: (Thinking to myself: Boy I'd like to see the look on their faces when they get this!) Oh the memories :lol: It turns out that their newest and greatest back then was not all that. Man, they have come a long way!

Looks like this got a little out of topic. It is definitely pre-1980 since it’s mentioned in the Jan 1980 CB Radar detector test.
I like to show this one to the students since it is so strange looking (I have one with a broken K band antenna and one that is in great condition).
BTW - This can be tested with a Mattel Hot Wheels gun for X band.
As far as worth – yes probably as a paperweight or a conversation piece it would draw more money.
