Okay i want to know some information on the cobra XRS-9930. I don't want people to tell me to get a bel, escort, valentine 1, because i do know how those perform, i do use valentine 1 at times (shared for family) and i own 2 older cobras one from 1993, and some other kind that i have no idea. I just want to know the xrs 9930 performance range on ka and k. I know not to trust cobras at hyper speeds but it would be nice to know their range and how well do other detector users here trust them with your experience?

I was just curious about the 9930 so when I read thru the posts, it seems they do okay for the casual speeder but it seems they completely miss some radars on the one hand and false a lot on the other.
I know you were wondering specifically about the 9930, but if one WERE looking for a detector in that price range, a better buy for the same, if not less, money would be the Whistler XTR-690 or Pro-78

Yeah or you could go for the lower end beltronics...and i've heard great things about the whistler pro-78. I have an older cobra esd 9110 and it's performance really really varies. At times it will detect ka from half a mile, at times it won't detect till i see the cop then it will go off, and it's horrible over hills but will give somewhat of time around a curve. They're not reliable. But yeah any advice for a new detector user. go with a lower end beltronics they out perform cobra and whistler and can still be at an afforadable price.

Actually the new Whistler XTR-690 and Pro78 seem to be just as competent as anything on Bel's low end and some say much more so. Have you read the reviews and posts? I wouldn't lump them in with Cobras.

Agree 100%
The thing about Cobras is that they offer average range (like 0.5 miles on most bands, 0.3 miles Ka) in most cases that is enough to save you from many kinds of threat if you react to alerts immediately. However it has trouble with some Ka guns, failing to alert at all to them...
At the end of the day, I would not trust a Cobra for anything. It lures you into a false sense of security. And the 9930 is an expensive detector too. that money is MUCH better spent on the Whistler XTR-690 or Pro-78, which have demonstrated very impressive performance -- enough to impress some of the expert members around here.

i've seen some videos on them but i haven't read much reviews, but thanks for that note on that, yeah as the other guy said they do not alert to some ka guns, the one i have has given me ka at .5 but once again that is with only one cop car, the rest it will give me almost no time to alert. Cobras are a false sense of security, and if i chose to speed i'd be using the v1...i have this thing where i feel completely unsafe without the v1 in my car

I had a great C/O K/Ka alert today. The car was sitting JUST on the other side of the crest of a hill. The ESD 7000/737 let me know just as I topped the hill. Thanks for the 100 foot warning!

Hey, are u still using yours? I got one CHEAP off eBay. Haven't done much with it yet. I wish other detectors had the screen. It's pretty damn cool. I'm gonna go Ka hunting tomorrow and see how it does/doesn't.

Well, I really want a V1 but that may still wait a while. I'm either going to step up to the Whistler XTR-690 (can be found online for $120 in some places) or jump up to an Escort 8500 X50. I like the Bels but don't want to fool with the glitches.

Is the PNI really a peice of junk?

Well, it seems to be VERY insensitive.... It has NO off-axis capability. Last week I sat 90 degrees from a trooper at a redlight running c/o Ka and the thing didn't alert me until he had turned and was 1 foot from my bumper.....

Damn! I didn't realize the PNI was that bad.
I'd stick with the 9930, I saw a comparison test with either the 9930 or maybe it was 97?? but the Cobra didn't do that bad. Not good, but not bad.
I'll try to find the review again just read it yesterday.

My what a difference a few weeks makes. The 9930 is now in my wife's car and I have a new v955 in mine. The one thing I said I wasn't going to get. But in digging around through the forums, the 955 seems pretty darn reliable. It does work a good bit better than the 9930 and makes the PNI seem like a toy.

haha, awesome! the 995 seems like a nice one, I really really want the bel sti i've found a few for 370 on ebay but for some reason i don't trust them.

955, not 995! :o Yes, the STI Driver is awesome if you can afford it. But there are too many issues with them to buy one off eBay. You'll have to buy from an authorized reseller to send it in to get the 33.8 Ka fix.

woops! lol ah! the numbers all jumped at me and confused me to believe you had a 995.....lol. Yeah that's the only downside to the STI :x

The 955 is basically the same detector as the 995, just with less features.
