I have a Cobra radar dectector, which I really like. But, the only thing I'm not too clear about it, is what VGR means when it pops up.
When I tried googling it, I never really got a clear answer. Can anyone clue me in? thanks....

What kind of Cobra do you have? You said 'VGR' pops up on the screen? When do you notice that it pops up on the screen?
You don't mean VG2, do you?

yea...... my fault.
that's what I meant. VG2

That means it *thinks* it has detected a VG2 RDD, and shuts down for a period of time to avoid detection.
Unless you live somewhere where detectors are illegal, I doubt it has actually picked up a VG2. There's the slim chance it might be a commercial enforcement vehicle, but in reality its probably a false.

You mean VG2....
In Virginia, Washington D.C. where radar detector use is outlawed, police use Radar Detector Detectors (RDD) to detect radar detectors.
The VG2 was the first RDD used by police to detect radar detectors. Radar detector manufacturers responded by moving the frequency of their oscillators, thus defeating the VG2. Today VG2 RDD's are used by very few, if any police departments.
Several radar detector manufacturers claim that their radar detectors are immune to VG3. One problem, there is no such thing as VG3.
A company called Stealth Micro Systems has developed a new RDD that is now in use by police departments called the Spectre.
Several radar detector companies, including Cobra, advertise that their radar detectors are immune to the Spectre. Recently the Spectre 3 model has emerged.
Currently there is only one radar detector that can defeat the Spectre and that is the Bel STI

It picks up Spectre... but not very often. Maybe once every couple of weeks.
I know that radar detectors aren't illegal here, but it pops up all the time. I see it at least 3 times a day. Its rather annoying. So it's basically the police trying to find out which drivers are using radar detectors?
Is it something I should be worried about?

Nope, its just your Cobra...... I'm not trying to be mean but Cobras
are the worst detectors made besides Rocky Mountain Radar.
Please don't take it to heart, cobras are everywhere so people
buy them.
Cobra has all kinds of marketing tricks to make you think
their detectors are better. One og these tricks is to say
their detector pick up 12 bands. In reality, there are only
3 radar bands and One Laser band.
They say 12 to make you think it's better.
I wouldn't worry to much about it stating it's detecting
VG2, it's just the detector falsing.
by the way do you live in Virgina or Washington.
If do then you may see a VG2 or Spectra.

Texas. that sux. I got a crappy radar detector...
It seems to work fine. Its had alot of saves. What radar would you recommend then?

HarleyJane,
Good, I didn't want you to take it the wrong way, I only
want to help you.
No need to worry there are no VG2 or Spectre in Texas,
Detectors are perfectly legal there.
I'd recommend either a V1 or a escort 8500 X50.
Both these are Major player in the Radar Detector
field.
If you do a lot of Interstate driving, the V1 would be better.
The V1 has really good Range but tends to be noisy.
Meaning it has more false alerts
If you do a lot of City driving, the X50 is your detector
The Escort is known for it's filtering and won't false as much.
The range I believe is just as good as the V1.

Also if you don't want to spend quite that much.
Try the Whistler Pro 78 or XTR-690 both preform very well and won't break the bank. :D

My guess is you went with the Cobra because you couldn't spend much. Try the above mentioned Whistlers, they should be a great improvement over your current Cobra, and only around 130 if you shop around online. :)

X3! Either of the mentioned Whistlers are the "best bang for the buck" in my book. :)

DPS has been documented on this forum to use the Spectre 3 to "time" instant on shots at detector users.
FYI: Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) uses Spectre 3 to find RD users in commercial trucks. In Texas commercial trucks can't use RDs. But DPS can use RDDs anytime they want. Can't write you a ticket for it since RDs are legal in TX but I think it's a pretty clever use of they're technology.
If and when Bell makes a concealed STi model I will convert my high end unit to that one.

Commercial trucks and buses can't use radar detectors anywhere, it's prohibited nationally per DOT regulations.

Yeah, I was going to say....we just had a thread on Spectre use in Texas didn't we?
HarleyJane, I don't know what Cobra you have, but if you have a newer one where you can disable VG-2, Spectre, and POP, do so and you'll have a decent detector that's pretty quiet (to itself, at least).
No, it's not going to get 4 mile hits around curves, but at the very least it'll give you a small bit of warning if you're not some waay over the limit speeder. If you decide to move up to a newer, nicer detector, Whistler has a couple of good models in the low-mid $100 range depending on where you buy them (XTR-690 and Pro78) as does Bel (940 and even the 955 in some stores).

i get that all the time, i have a cobra to play around with in the city and vg2 and pop go off all the time because of other cobras. It's funny how cobras false on each other driving down the road cause I imagine we both are falsing on each others haha. Cobras can be a hit and miss, it really depends that's the problem it's not a good all round detector it's horrible compared to the other companies. If you have the big bucks go get a valentine 1 they're the best. Other wise you can stick to the cobra or move up to the bels or whistlers

Actually, there are alot of Spectres in TX. In fact, TX may have the largest concentration of Spectres in the US. The Texas DPS use them to catch detectors in large trucks.

Another vote fo the XTR-690/Pro-78 -- I own one and it's a fantastic detector.
As far as VG2 on Cobra, VG2 steady on means the detector found VG-2 type emissions, blinking means it detected Spectre I
Both do not affect the oscillator; the Cobras were designed to be immune/undetectable by the two, and only detect these RDD's as a FYI. Most people have found this detection to be pretty unreliable though. Gas stations love to false on VG2

Depending on the model. Mine gives separate alerts for VG2 and Spectre. But I tried it and POP on for one day and my detector went crazy. With everything off, it's a night and day difference.
