Hey guys, you seem like experts on this radar stuff so i got a question for you. I was recently given a cobra XRS 9930 as a present for my b day. after hooking it up however, it began goin nuts. Almost everywhere i drive it picks up the "KA"band. After about a day i just put it on mute cus it was really startin to piss me off. I mean i would be drivin through the woods somewhere with nothing in site an "KA 5" blaring on my screen. Whats the deal with it? Any ideas?

Well, stick w/ either a Whistler,Beltronics,Escort, or Valentine One. These are the best you can buy. Whistler has proven itself and is also one of the most affordable of the four and they have the best CS.

I would suggest a Bel 955, I have one and I love it to death. Amazing range for the price, and VERY good (not the best, but very good) ramp up as the signal increases. For $180 or so, you cant go wrong with it. Check out the GOL tests on it, its performed VERY well.

Depends on fast you drive, what kind of driving you'll be doing (city of highway), and how much you are willing to spend.

Recommended units $200 and below would be Beltronics Vector 940, Beltronics Vector 955, Whistler XTR-690, Whistler Pro-78.

$300 and up range will get you some of the best. I recommend the Escort X50 or the V1.

Do some research about features and detection range and you should watch some videos to help you decide which unit to buy.

A good place to start would be using the search function on this site and www.guysoflidar.com

Hope this helps.

Another vote for the Bel 955 here. I've got one and love it. I also have a 9930 and if you're getting a "5" alert on ANYTHING it's defective. I could have NORAD on my hood and only get a "Ka 1" alert. 9930's just aren't that sensitive.

Question; have you looked at the settings? Make sure VG-2 is off, Spectre is off, and POP is off. They tend to drastically increase your own falses as well as increase the leakage picked up by other detectors.

Cobras are CRAP! I have owned three before I got wiser. All three would intermittently false Ka on a VERY regular basis. It appears that they have yet to fix this concern. They will tell you to send it in but you will just get a new POS. My first one was upgraded by Cobra then it got stolen. So I was dumb enough to get another one through a GM rewards system @ retail value for my points (179 :x ). The best thing that ever happened is that that pile also got stolen. Now I have an X50 and am VERY happy with its performance! It ONLY alerts to true radar sources (yes it does detect door openers) but they are considered to be a true source of radar. No more BS Ka alerts. :!: :D I do firmly believe that Cobras detect themselves. It makes me ill that 9 of 10 cars I see with RDs have that crap in them. :!: They false Ka like crazy yet can't smell the real McCoy (Ka) until a range of 500ft (CO). Dig it?
