I have been using my bel980 for about 1.5 years since i got it off ebay (used). It worked perfectly before... About a week ago i started noticing that it had problems.

During hot weather, or when the sun is shining brightly it begins to act up. I turn it on and it is mounted on my windshield, it works for the first 10 minutes while i am on the highway, then i begins to heat up from the sun. Then suddenly I get KA band (strength 9!), and it keeps going. Last time that kept going for 20 minutes straight. Hell, it does not even false at my local grocery store. I tried to turn it off, then on again, and again two minutes later, same stuff, but now with strength 9 K band.

I tried to put the bastard in my fridge and cooled it off after it got hot on my drive home from the sun. I put it back in my car, and it worked perfectly while it was cool... No false ka, k . nothing, and it started to false at grocery stores.

I dont even know what to do.
I am thinking of cutting out a cardboard, and putting it on top of my detector so that it would have some shade from the sun. Sounds rednecky(i know). I dont think it would affect radar, not laser alerts (am i right?)

Any other suggestions to battle this, guys?

I would suggest that you call Bel and send it in for service

Being that you got it used and off E-Bay, you have no warranty, so they will charge you a fee to repair it.

My Bel 980 does the same thing but not as bad as yours sounds.
It just seems to false alot on KA, I always say I can tell when a traffic light is going to change because my Bel 980 will go off on KA Band.

I would think getting service on that would not be worth the money, that is why I have not sent mine in. The warranty is only a 2 year warranty on the Bel 980 and I have had mine longer than that.

Thankfully mine is not as bad as yours and mine still works damn good when it does get a real threat.

I also have a Bel980 and if you look in the owners manual under Post-Warranty Service it say's " Enclose with your unit $85us or $105 Canadian to cover inspection and postage return. Prices subject to change without notice.

Mine overheats and I end up shuting it off for a minute or two and then power it back on and it will start working again.

Good Luck

Thanks for the tips guys, and now i know i am not the only one with some bel980 probs. It think is wouldn't be economical to turn it in back to bel to fix it. I think i will make a cardboard cutout for it and give it a bit of shade from the sun.

The very least, i always have my fridge to put the bel in.

Wow! Their service charges went up! Use to be $45US.

Ask about trading it in on a 995. They may give you $80 for it, so you can get a 995 for $219. Not a bad deal. It did well in the SML tests.
