Any disadvantage to using detector activated in POP mode? Just got my new X50.

It does not false "all the time" but it surely falses more with POP mode on. With POP off, it's a charm. The POP display will show up when it falses. Same thing with the RX65, it also falses when POP mode is on. When POP mode off, it's the quietest of all top 3 RD's. With the V1, you can't tell if POP falses because it only alerts you with a K or Ka alert. But the V1 falses more than the RX65 and the X50 i all 3 bands plus laser. I'm not sure of that because the POP mode with the V1 is always on. That might be a factor but again i'm not sure.

From the Escort site:

http://www.escortradar.com/radar-detector-faq.htm

The Passport 8500 X50 has a selectable POP feature, so its POP mode radar detection can be switched on or off as desired. You may notice an increase in Ka-band false alerts when POP mode radar detection is switched on.

The default setting is OFF so you be the judge.

The POP falses on the x50 are not as bad as what people think...

If POP is not used in your area why turn it on because it does false more and the first few times it goes off it will scare the crap out of you.

Im in Tx, still have POP off on the X50. I turned it on the other day for the 3rd time just to see how many I would get. I averaged at least two in an 16 mile round trip from work and back. None of these jurisdictions use POP.

Comparing the RX65 and X50 with POP on, the X50 falses more than the RX65. When the X50 falses, it don't false every hour or so. I get an average of 2-3 a day with the X50 falsing with POP on.

Thats not a false..the X50 has a built in Spectre III to detect other detectors, but unlike the v1 you can turn it off!

What REV do you have? I do not get many POP falses in my area, and my area is pleagued with cobras, and RMR's.

The only bad thing about keeping pop on all the time is it will false however it does not false as much as some people would like to try to make you think. I leave my X50,s pop mode on and it hardly ever falses.

One thing escort really need to do is not have POP signal at full alert...

I agree it would be nice to see Escort not have pop at full alert. I think why Escort did this was because they feel that the X50 might not be able to see it all the time as radartest said that the X50 only picked up pop %75 of the time.

I do agree with Sethy on this issue for sure.

just came back from the store on highway mode just behind the crest of a hill on a right turn i got 2 rapid pop signals, then a 3/4 strength ka signal, as I crested the hill signal went full strength radar at bottom of hill. Approx. 2/10 mile from 1st pop signal behind hill to radar car at bottom. I had to find a place to turn around switched to auto mode went back thru this time no pop signal just the same ka signal as I approached the hill, I think I know why no pop signal, he had some one pulled over. have to wait for next time to see if i get a pop signal in auto mode. Both alerts were in enough time to check my speed and slow down if needed.

These are the kind of true storys I love to here.

For the record your X50 may have just sounded off a false alert on pop mode. My X50 seems to act the same kind of way sometimes.

Try running the X50 in tech mode. When you get a Ka alert, note the frequency. In my neck of the woods, there is a local P.D. who uses Ka in the 35.500's. If I have pop activated, it will start pop falsing as I get beside the officer. You also see the tech display change to 33.800 or in that freq. range. After I'm past the leo the display goes back to 35.500. Weird eh?? Perhaps there are a bunch of "out of tune" radar units out there?? Makes you wonder.

Do you have a list of the 25 states or is it a rumor?

I put my X50 in POP mode one day last week, my commute is 8 miles round trip. Going into work, nothing. Coming home, it falsed POP twice. Once while in traffic, and 2nd time, just as a car passed me from the other direction. I'm betting both of these were from POS detectors *COUGH*cobra*COUGH* ;)

With POP off I never get Ka falses on my X50. :D

CURSed--->(Cobra, Uniden, Radio-Shack) based POP falses !!!!!

I use my Uniden 9100SW1 as a RD tester as it has two reproducible IF's, one K-Band, one X-Band. Have to get within 2 inches, however, thanks to cast case, I suppose.

Yeah in my area of TX when I had my X50 with POP on it would always false wherever I went (It scared me senseless every time) and all the times it went off I look around for a cop but all I ever saw were dumb little kids with their $100 Cobra RDs sittin on non-slip pads on their dashboards. So in other words POP is useless, in my opinion. HOWEVER my buddy says that he got a POP ticket in the same area with his X50 (Caught 44 in a 30) but the way he described it it must've been an instant-on radar.
