Any Similar Experience: SELF CAL?

In my experience, a sure-fire way to trigger a "SELF CAL" seems to be powering in the presence of an X-Band source. You're also likely to get one on the next power up if the source is absent.

This is bad if you work at a supermaket or a site with motion detectors and don't have one at home.

Has anyone else had this experience?
I suspect that if you couple this with starting a car at the same time (with the attendant voltage drop), you are asking for a "SERVICE REQUIRED" or at the very least, tempting fate.

B+ sensing on your car's EMC is suppressed during starter operation. Escort needs to put a delay in before a CAL is initiated in order to avoid this effect. Better yet: VOLTAGE REGULATION

Today I was testing my Uniden GPSRD in the presence of my 8500 REV 13 and when both got a Ka signal, 8500 went into self cal. Turned it off and back on (GPSRD and Ka 35.5 still active) and it went self cal. Put it on the bench, reset and left it on the supply, all is well for now.

when I started my car the other day in the parking lot (no radar anywhere around here) it did the self cal message for a while. I waited a few minutes but it didn't change so I unplugged and replugged. It did it again but on the next plugin, it lagged a bit on POP ON and then went to normal. Hasn't done it since. Should I be worried? Also, how long is the warranty? I remember buying it sometime around april/may last year.

True. The Escort must be in a clean environment to power on properly. You may or may not get away with it. My neighbor used to be a deputy and I always had problems so I just left it powered up and hit the mute before going in for the night. For some reason he almost always left his radar on.

i guess i'll take the other side of the coin here. i have never had a single problem with my x50. i leave it plugged in all the time and it goes on and off with each turn of the key. i frequent all the major stores with the same door openers etc and havent had a single issue. the unit starts up as normal and starts alerting to whatever the freq. is. i have the x50 blue rev5. maybe i"m the exception to the rule. i always knew i was a little special.:)

self cal isnt a bad thing - the unit is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. its in the manual. if your unit is having a problem the processor is trying to correct it. if it cant then you will need it serviced. it just so happens that the self cal pops up when it is in need of calibration or is performing a self check. it doesnt mean its broke yet.
