I always try to, haven't succeeded yet.

The most common case is I spot a cop going the same direction as me a couple of cars up on the interstate. I of coarse have to slow down so I don't pass him. Then, the next time we pass a truck, I go real slow in the left lane to piss off who ever is behind me. Then, as soon as I take for ever getting back to the right lane, they buzz by in the left. So far they have always spotted the cop too though so they just slam on the brakes and pull back in .

Man, this topic deserves my 1st post.

I've had the V1 for all of 3 weeks now, but I've developed a sick fascination for trying to bait other (less informed) drivers into speed traps. I've had several occasions now where I've detected IO traps miles away, but will try to push the a$$hole drivers right into a trap. Haven't been successful yet, but there is some strange satisfaction knowing what lies ahead, while the other sheep drive straight into the slaughter.

Call me sick but I likey the new V1 and the carnage it leaves behind!!

P.S. 4 saves today, I-70 Denver to Idaho Springs!!

Why would you pull this move on some random driver who did nothing to you?

I have had this happen when I wasn't trying. I was on WB I-8 JEO Yuma, an area where I have seen many multi-car DPS sting operations so I'm always cautious. Sure enough, there was a DPS trooper parked in the median just up the road, so I was on my best behavior in the right lane. Right then some dimbot decides to pass me; she gets even with my front bumper before she spots the cop, at which point she nails the brakes and falls back like she had a tailhook. :D

The cop must have been laughing too hard to drive, because he didn't pull out after her. :)

My opinion you got an a hole riding your ass, get over to the right and let them by, if someone wants the left lane and is going faster than me its theirs. By the way a good rabbit will take the fall without you having to do anything. This has been the case many times in my case, I get a slight Ka blip on a road I travel home from work I know its a cop I get over and slow down, sure enough a guy on my butt passes me can gets hooked.

Agreed, however you are not taking into account those a-holes who are tailgating you, but have no intention of passing you, no matter what lane you are in, because you are their rabbit. Those people deserve to die.

I see those kinds of people on the highway all the time, weekends especially. They have no problem driving 80+ mph so long as the person 5 feet in front of them is going that fast too. As soon as you move over to let them pass they slow down.

I always bait someone at a speed-trap I know of.

A long stretch of rural highway attracts this one cop on a bike who sits in a shaded spot under a tree. I can pick him up a mile away firing his gun at traffic.

I ride a motorcycle and the audio of the Escort is pumped into my earphones. When I get a blast from his gun, I'll slow down and wave the following car (often a soccer mom with her brood of kids in a min-van) to go around me with my left gloved hand.

They often step on the gas to pass and often over a double-yellow line. So when they approach him, he's tossing in the radar gun and getting set to pursue them.

I just hope I never run into the soccer mom later down the road.

I have done this by accident. I always pass fast on the left than drop back to my cruising speed on the right.
A few times I have had someone behind me following but because of my tactics it leaves them open for getting a ticket for my speed. The LEO sees my speed than sees the other driver in the left fast lane.

What are they, ducklings? Did they imprint on you like a Momma Duck and now they mimic your every move?

That's hardly your fault. If they can't think for themselves when they drive they deserve to get cited, IMHO.

I usually kick it up by 5-10 MPH when I pass, as well. The less time I spend in close proximity to a vehicle I'm passing, the better I like it. Especially semis; the last thing I need is for one of those cheap retread tires to shed an "alligator" when I'm right next to those 18 wheels, so I make sure not to lollygag. Then when I return to the right lane I just take my foot off the gas and let my cruise control resume my normal cruising speed.

I slow down to pass. A slower closing speed is less obvious if I'm being observed, and a passing speed no more than 10-15mph faster than the passed car usually doesn't frighten or upset anyone. If someone's following me, I hope that they get the hint, but sometimes they don't. If they don't, sometimes they still make decent rabbits, but I try not to encourage them. If it's daylight, I usually prefer to lead. At night, there are places where a rabbit is your only hope, other than slowing down periodically.

You ever have this happen before? You are driving in the left hand lane and someone in front of you is driving real slow. You give them time to move over but they don't want to, so you pressure them and they finally move over to the right. But then they speed up in the right hand lane and try to match your speed. This of course pisses me off and I have to do over 90 just to be able to move over to the right again.

Yes. I usually do one of these things: 1) blow their doors off, 2) scrape them off when passing more traffic, or 3) slow down and see what they do next time. I don't usually tolerate anyone driving right next to me on the highway only because it might be misinterpreted as "racing" by a casual observer.

I agree, had one come apart as I was passing a truck a few weeks ago. Thank goodness it was on the company truck, a huge piece smacked the front grill and put about an 18 inch crack in the grille. I can only imagine the damage to the Vette that would have caused. Now I wait till I can go completely around a semi before I get ready to pass.

I can't say I ever have, but my roommate in college did once. He came in and was bragging that some jackass was trying to race him on the street, and egging him on at all the stop lights. So, at the light before a common speed trap, John revved the engine and peeled out, and the guy floored it. John just raced to the speed limit, and the guy flew by honking. *FLASHING LIGHTS* *OWNED*

I'm constantly trying to bait RD users into a ticket. I'll stay near them, hitting them with Ka. If they mute it, I turn it off, then back on, so their RD keeps alerting constantly. After a few miles, they usually just turn their RD off altogether, especially if they have passengers. Then I'm hoping there's a speed trap over the next hill, but there never is. :(

:uponsoapbox:

Some people seem to think it's "cool" to cruise in the #1 lane. You see them getting onto the freeway and IMMEDUATELY cutting across 7 lanes of traffic to get over to the leftmost lane, usually cutting people off in the process and leaving a huge swath of brake lights in their wake. Then they proceed to drive slowly, talk on their cell phones, apply eye makeup, etc. until they're almost at their exit. Then it's a panicked dash across 7 lanes of traffic to make it to the exit ramp.

Keep right except to pass is the law in most states. LLBs (Left Lane Blockers) are a major factor in traffic congestion; if they'd just stay the **** out of the way, more people could get by and the roads would flow more smoothly.

Another HUGE peeve of mine.
I even yell at my girlfriend with this at times. Having to pass people less than 1/4 mile from the exit just to get ahead........for what? A 1-2 second lead when you hit the exit ramp? The idiots that are doing it at the last second from the far left lane drive me nuts. I'm always secretly hoping they hit the guardrail on their way over...they deserve it for putting everyone elses life in danger.

My biggest pet peeve is people who don't know how to merge on the highway, they are the ones always causing traffic backups. Or when there is a construction zone coming, and instead of merging over when they should they make a mad dash to be first in line causing a bottle neck right where the lane closes.

Actually our state law states that they don't have to move over to let you in. You have to find your own space, but I mean it is just common courtesy that some people lack. If I could I would just ram them right off the highway.

Maybe not. I've actually been run off the road into the median by someone who went left trying to avoid a car entering from an entrance ramp. That is, the new car turned left into the car in the right lane when I was passing in the left lane. No injuries, luckily, and only minor damage to my car, so I just ate it. The middle driver actually stopped to apologize and make sure I was alright, but the driver of the merging car, which was really the one at fault IMHO, sped away and I didn't get the plate. Thus, I really think that any law is good that keeps traffic from changing lanes abruptly, and that necessarily requires cars entering from an entrance ramp to yield. AFAIK, this is currently the law in most jurisdictions.

The law stating that you "don't have to move" into the left lane to allow people to merge wouldnt have saved you from that situation. That was just 2 idiots that didnt look to their left before merging.......1 the guy coming onto the highway, and 2 the guy that pulled into you as a result.

The law should state that if you are ABLE to safely move into the left lane to allow others to merge onto the highway, you MUST. Obviously if someone is coming in your lane and doesnt move over YOU CAN'T MERGE.

Yes and no. Yes, the person (#1) merging was definitely an idiot, since they should have known to yield but did not. No, the person (#2) in the right lane was not an idiot. She was just droning along at or near the speed limit with nothing calling for her attention, when suddenly idiot #1 put her life in jeopardy and shot her adrenaline through the roof. Yes, she should have checked to her left, but I could see that she would have been hit before she really had the chance (note: since then, I have decreased my approach/passing speed differential). I think at least half of the average untrained drivers on US roads would have done the same thing as #2 when thrown into the same situation. Thus, even if she could have been held legally at fault (and probably would have been if I had been seriously injured), the entering driver who failed to yield (or simply adjust speed enough to merge safely) was much more at fault, IMHO.

The law should state that if you are ABLE to safely move into the left lane to allow others to merge onto the highway, you MUST. Obviously if someone is coming in your lane and doesnt move over YOU CAN'T MERGE.

No, I completely disagree. When I'm in the right lane there's usually a reason for it (e.g., too tired to pay enough attention to speed, or a mechanical issue), and I give everyone else the same benefit of the doubt. I am usually happy to either slow down or speed up slightly to give merging traffic just enough space in front or behind me, but it is not my responsibility to move left for them. In that situation, I would only go left if a) the left lane was basically empty, b) the particular entrance ramp or circumstances looked particularly difficult for the driver attempting to merge, and/or c) I was about to change lanes anyway. I would never go left simply because someone just entering was trying to race or pressure me. In this instance, I truly believe that the law is correct.

The rabbit thread got me thinking about this, sometimes I wish when I have an obnoxious, dangerous tailgaiter I'll pick up some Statie running K (meaning I have a while). I can then continue to hold them up, realy piss them off, then drop the hammer and get them to chase, then right before getting to the LEO, slow down and pull into the right lane. Anyone done this?
yes, if it is someone that is irritating me. If I am already going well above the speed limit and still have someone on my tail, and am coming up on a leo, I have no problem at all moving over and letting them continue on into a trap.

I was traveling through Ohio on my way to Dayton for the Trans Am nationals when I hear over the CB of a LEO up ahead I have a few miles to go till I get to him so I slow down some but still slightly over PSL as I get closer to his location I get in the left lane to pass a very slow moving truck and am now going PSL since I am now only a half mile out from the LEO. As I am passing the truck some guy in a Camaro flies up behind me and starts to tail gate me. at this point the LEO is in sight so I figure the clown behind sees him (but as I find out he didn't) after I am a safe distance past the truck I pull back to the right lane (LEO in center median just ahead) as I do the clown in the Camaro hammers it wide open and flies right by the LEO! I look to the wife and say "looks like he's getting busted". sure enough a few seconds later the LEO blasts by me with the party lights on. I assume they had a little talk on the side of the road after that.

I didn't try to get the guy busted or anything I actually figured he would have seen the LEO sitting in the middle of the road because he wasn't even hidden. but the guy was an a$$ for tail gating me.

another occasion happened in VA, I was driving with my older brother in my 79TA from Boston to NC we are cruising along at about 80ish when this white mustang cobra pulls along side trying to bait us into a race. well it was 3am and we were not in the mood and about to pull into the rest stop to switch places (he was driving at the time) as we start to pull off into the rest area he swerves from the left lane cuts us off and enter the rest area. the next thing I see in the rear view is the car behind light up and cut us off as well giving chase to the cobra going into the rest stop! apparently the car behind the guy was a cop and must have been following him for a bit since he had to have been going 90+ when he came up on us and we hadn't passed any LEO's. well we go inside to use the restrooms and as we walk out the guy is being given a field sobriety test. looks like he was drunk and stupid.

earlier this year as i was going under an overpass here, another car went flying by me. i had slowed to PSL as its a regular spot where the locals run rear laser from the onramp just ahead.

sure enough as i was passing by the end of this onramp, i looked in my RVM and there was a squad car parked up there. very shortly after it passed me with the blues going and about a mile up the road he had pulled over the guy that passed me earlier.

shortest lived rabbit ever. he only lasted 10 seconds max

to answer the original question, no and i wouldnt like to do it to anybody either TBH. i usually flash oncoming cars if i think its safe (i.e. not an unmarked ;)) but the guy driving the black mercedes that overtakes me early on in this video could possibly count.

YouTube - Laser trap encounter. eye save. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtA_QTQQjeI)

i overtook him a few miles back and he seemed to be trying to keep up with me until we came into this area and had to stop at the lights. i reckon he decided to burn me there when i was after getting flashed by the first car at the lights and not up for a race anymore but he didnt see it ;).

i dont think he wanted/expected a ticket as first prize though :D

if their tailgating right when they come up on you...then I agree.
but being well over the PSL shouldnt make a difference...if someones behind you in the fast lane and wants to get by...YOUR speed shouldnt matter. Move and let them by. Just my opinion.

I am more than happy to let someone by and like I said I try not to use the left lane much, but it pisses me off when I get in the left lane to pass or something and people want to ride my tail. Especially the ones who are right on the bumper. If I were to stop or the people in front of me were to quickly stop the back of my car would be toast from the tailgaters running into me, and then I would probably get pushed into the people in front of me, if there were any.

which brings me to the next question of WHY do we not see more enforcement concerning the tailgating?? the county I live in has a traffic unit and of course the large majority of their enforcement efforts are on DUI and speed.

Many, many years ago, when the PSL was still 55, a local television station decided to get all self righteous and do an experiment on the highway. They sent four cars out to drive side-by-side at 55mph, not letting anyone past, to see how other drivers would react. It was chaos. Traffic was backed up for five miles, bumper to bumper at 55. At least two cars wrecked from trying to squeeze by on a shoulder. The station's switchboard imploded from all the angry calls after they aired the story that night. Absolutely amazing that they would do anything so stupid! But it just illustrates the attitude of those who cruise in the left lane. They think they are right, so screw everyone else!

No, they're not. Traffic on the through road has the right-of-way; it's the responsibility of merging traffic to plan ahead, find a gap, and merge into it. It's the incompetent ****s who can't merge properly are the a$$holes in that scenario.
lol. some people just do not have it together enough to plan ahead when it comes to anything driving related. I would say that merging is at the top of the list of things a lot of drivers around here don't do very well.

They must have gotten in legal trouble, no?

No, they didn't, unfortunately. I wish they would have. They defended themselves from the criticism saying they were travelling the "legal" speed limit, and that they had a helicopter above to alert them if any emergency vehicles were trying to get through. Idiots. I was so pissed off, and I wasn't even caught up in it!

Why would you pull this move on some random driver who did nothing to you?

So the cop will pull them over and I can go back to speeding.

Mr. Hyde has had this happen several times over the years. Twice, he was close enough to the action to see it through. In both cases, the right car was actively blocking the breakdown lane.

In the first case, Dr. Jeckle showed up and managed to get by on the left with 2 wheels in a grass median, and then slowed the right car down so everyone else could get by. Beautifully, one was a LEO who had apparently been stuck behind, and after a heart-skipping moment, drove past Dr. Jeckle to pull the car that had been blocking the left lane (for at least a good tounge lashing, one hopes).

In the second case, the left car was also actively defending the left shoulder. Dr. Jeckle faked left and made a beautiful "center lane" pass, leaving them both looking like the fools that they were.

I understand that neither Dr. Jeckle nor Mr.Hyde recommends either of the above tactics, at least not without professional training and excellent insurance. However, even though he won't admit it, Mr. Hyde is pleased that Dr. Jeckle manages to show up once in a while.

like I said.....it's common courtesy for those that have room to move over to to do so.

Thanks, kid, but I don't need you to move over to "let me in." In fact, I much prefer it if you keep a steady course and speed so that I can plan my merge. I'm perfectly capable of adjusting my speed to either merge in front of you or behind you (wherever the gap happens to be located).

Did it ever occur to you that your "courtesy" to that one car merging onto the road might end up inconveniencing a whole bunch of other cars who are using the passing lane at the same time trying to get around you? They now have to slam on their brakes because you suddenly changed lanes in front of them. Thus, in order to "help" one driver you end up screwing over 5 others - and the original driver probably didn't even need your "help" in the first place!

Ponder upon that, young Padawan Driver. :D

Actually, it wasn't a TV station (it was a group of college kids), and it wasn't so very many years ago (2006). But the effects were precisely as you describe:

It's not just you. Fortunately, the visuals are what's important; you don't really need to hear a bunch of arrogant punks trying to justify their asinine experiment. :D

Yeah, those sort of slacker pukes are the reason I just cringe and roll my eyes everytime someone starts mouthing off about how we need to mobilise the youth of America politically.

The FAILURE of their sound is symbolic of their entire existence.

Faggoty little beeyotches think they're original. I had never seen this before. It's definitely not the same as the TV station stunt from about 25 years ago. We didn't have slacker emo fags 25 years ago.

It was dangerous because they were "following the law?" Umm... no, a-hole. Impeding traffic in the left lane is not "following the law" in most states.
