View Full Version : Cop brags about huge lidar ticket!

<<JAZZY>>

I found a cop on a car forum bragging about using a Marksman LTI lidar gun to nail a 2009 Corvette ZR1 with a Passport 8500 and no laser jammer. It happened on Sunday, 9/21/08, on the Ocean Parkway heading down to Captree State Park. He nailed him going 150 mph @ 2048.2 feet. If only this guy had a Laser Interceptor laser jammer installed, things would have been very different.

Here is the picture he took as proof of his traffic stop:

A little information about the Ocean Parkway:

Ocean Parkway (Long Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_Parkway_(Long_Island))

The Ocean Parkway is a 15.59-mile (25.09 km) long state parkway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkway) that traverses the length of barrier beaches (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach) immediately south of Long Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island), New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York). The Ocean Parkway begins at the southern terminus of the Meadowbrook State Parkway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meadowbrook_State_Parkway), intersects the south end of the Wantagh State Parkway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wantagh_State_Parkway), and ends just past the southern terminus of the Robert Moses Causeway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Moses_Causeway). The parkway services a number of parks, including Jones Beach State Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jones_Beach_State_Park) and Captree State Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captree_State_Park). It is designated New York State Reference Route 909D, an unsigned reference route (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reference_route_(New_York)).

That's a shame...The guy deserved it though if he was unprotected and didn't have another car driving point.

I'm assuming the Vette had a front plate, cuz I see no other way of getting a reading on a Vette with a Marksman at that distance, and the driver not having some time to slow down.

Maybe he was slowing down :hairfire:

Yes Sir! Front plates in NY!

Yeah, Front plates are mandatory in NY.

I would dare say at that distance any jammer (from the ZR4 'upwards') would have been more then sufficient to jam until he had time to slow in the Vette.

Just goes to show, people can have all the money in the world, but that doesn't mean they have any common sense... a radar detector can't save that. (Though a jammer could have here.) :D

I kind of feel bad for the guy (except at those speeds, your asking for trouble, and danger). Also I am astonished he stopped for the LEO.

Personally I would have pushed it harder, I bet he could have gotten away. I remember watching speeders and a cop pulled over a Ferrari. The cop said, "if he decided to run, we would not catch him".

I've always told myself that if I was going over 100mph, and I thought that there would be a possiblity that I would get away, I'd run. I'm thinking that the teg would probably be able to top out around 170 or so, and get there pretty fast, I'd be atleast a few hundred yards away before the cop starts to really pull out. Don't know though. I'd be scared sh1tless.

True, but If I could get outta sight in like 15 seconds or so and get to an exit, I think I might be ok.

The problem, for me, is this:

Stopping - maybe a ticket, maybe not.

Not stopping - maybe getting away, maybe felony evasion.

I guess the real determinant is how fast you're going, and what kind of ticket that'll be. ;)

At that speed its not maybe a ticket, its guaranteed arrest and felony reckless driving.

170? not likely in a turbo teg... not for long at least. Turbo hondas and topping out in 5th almost never end well :-/

Buddy of mine was racing (and beating mind you) a procharged c5 vette and he burnt a piston at about 175... built gsr 9:1 on ls crank w/ stock sleeves and an sc61 dynoed at 460whp...

The LI might of saved him from a reading, but no way he would be able to get down to the PSL in time, the cop could still go after him for reckless driving since that is a ridiculous amount of speed and its obvious.

And you would most likely bump your head getting into the police car, NFW would I run.

That road is known for high speeds definitely a fun road though I got a ride in a viper with nitrous on that road and the guy was up to 160 in no time leaving they r6 that was egging him on far behind.

I also had a friend who got in major trouble there for street racing

Any laser jammer could of saved that guy

Yeah, bad sh1t can happen, hopefully the water/meth would save me from that! I've seen them top out pretty high up there. Fastest I've had mine was 150, but I was only at around 250 whp. I'm thinking (assuming/hoping) I should be able to get another 20mph with around 500whp (on water/meth) but we'll see. I doubt I'd ever get it up that high in any type of race, but you never know. I'll be on JE 9:1s LS crank, stock sleeves, running a garret 60-1. Hopefully that would get me up there. It's in rebuild faze right now.

Props to your friend for taking out a supercharged Vette. With FI those things are raw!!! Hell without FI their pretty sick.

yea that vette was putting out a little less than 560 uncorrected on a mustang dyno..

but yea 5th gear runs in hondas are bad news... those little motors simply cannot handle 5x more torque than stock for extended periods of time

If you can't lose them before they start chasing you it's over. You have to make them believe there is no reason in even trying to catch you.

Well the leo had 2000 feet to start pulling out. I also wonder why the vette didn't try and flip a U turn assuming he saw the leo. Who knows, I wonder what the consequences were.

Not as fitting as the consequences would have been had he wrecked out trying to pull a u-turn at 150.

Ocean parkway is a very long but thin island with only 2 ways off. He can be caught easily if the statie just uses his radio. Anyway Ocean parkway has a big corvette hangout spot there on Sundays. I'm surprised he didn't have other corvette owners make sure the way was clear for his run:eek:. I try not to speed there, but that road is so flat, and straight.

If your gonna go balls out and speed or race on the highway, you always have to have a scout in front and behind, or at least do a run through the area to try and be as certain as you can be that there's no law enforcement.
