View Full Version : I'm thinking to buy the XRS R7

I have been refusing to buy a radar detector main because I dont want to make my car interior look messy. I have a 09 SLK and it's small inside. But I have already got 2 tickets in the two months of driving this car :( and I think I have to do something about it. I did some research and found the XRS R7, which I thought was the perfect solution for me (no cluttering). But you guys say Cobra sucks and that put me off a bit. Is the R7 really that bad? And what should be my best choice given my non-cluttering requirement?
Thank you ver much.

I don't want to sound mean but you spent at least $45K on a new car and you want to buy the worst brand of radar detector. Why???
If you have that kind of money why don't you invest in a good radar detector. If you want a remote mounted radar detector you have to look at the Escort 9500ci or the Beltronics Sti-r. The difference between them is that the 9500ci has built in laser jamming and GPS to prevent annoying falsing from stationaly targets. The laser jammer in the 9500ci is not the best and not the worst. From that information I can gather, it works a ton better on smaller cars. All the tests you will see are done with SUV's.
Also think about investing in a laser jammer, this of course is based on how much laser is used in your area and once again how much you want to spend. Just as a FYI, the Laser Interceptor is the best jammer available so I would definitely think about that.

If you get the Cobra... you are just asking for more speeding tickets. Though, I must say... TheVeilGuy seemed to have a review that 'overall' it was a decent and somewhat innovative detector... but it still fell short on the one thing Cobras always do: Detection.
You must remember also a detector is not a free-pass to speed... laser and I/O will own an RD if used properly... so its up the the RD user to know the limits of their detector and use it as effectively as possible.
If you are going to spend $300-400 on an RD:
-Bel Vector 995
-Escort X50
-Bel RX65
-V1
Are the models you should be looking at and hardwiring them high on the windshield to reduce the clutter/cords.

If that's what your looking at buying, just save your money for tickets. What has made you want to buy the Cobra? Was it all the great reviews or the 12 bands of protection? LOL. Just kidding with you. If you have the money to spend on a car like that, I'm assuming you could shell out a little bit of cash for a decent detector. The Valentine 1, and passport 9500ix can be had for 500 bucks or less, and are excellent detectors. If you don't want anything on your dash you could look into the 9500ci. It's expensive, but it is supposed to be great.
Depending on your budget, any of those will be miles above the cobra. You may also want to look into getting Viel and a laser jammer if lots of laser is used in your area.
Do research on all these different detectors and choose the one you think will suit you the best. For me, it's V1 because I need maximum protection from a windshield unit, and will accept some of the more regular falsing as part of the package. If you want a less hands on detector that is still badass and will false less, the 9500ix is the good choice.
Eithier way you go, please don't get the cobra. My V1 picks up every damn Cobra within a half a mile, LOL. If you do decide to cheap out, at least use it the right way. and keep it high and level, not pointed at the sky, backwards, towards the ground, in your coffee cup, none of that sh1t.

See the part that bothers me about this is the 'Clutter on the dash' stuff is that... the Cobra will cause as much (if not more) clutter for him then a dash-mount unit that is hardwired...and be exponentially worse in detection range.

Thanks! I'm glad I asked you guys first before wasting the money on the Cobra :) Now, the 9500i looks like the best option for me.
- 9500ci Sounds like I need to cut the dash to install it (Is it true?) I'm not comfortable in doing that.
- V1 I dont like the look at all and to me look is as important as performance. (That's also why I bought my SLK55. It has both :))
- 9500ix There's no fixed cameras around here.
I just looked where I can install the 9500i i and found that I can put it high up (above the rear-view mirror) and I can still see it since the roof line is very low.
So far so good, now one question: How do I power the unit?
I know I can use the cigarette lighter but the cord will kill me. How do I hard wire the thing? Can I do it myself?
Again, thanks.

If you don't want the power cord hanging down and don't feel comfortable hard wiring it, take a look at what I did. (http://www.radardetector.net/forums/radar-detectors-general/38727-best-place-mount-2.html)

A V1 will look a whole lot better than your car sitting on the side of the road with the red and blues on behind you.

The V1 takes bad pictures. It's much nicer looking in person.

Zapple That's a great idea. I will definitely try that, at least until I find out how to safely open the overhead unit.
Now, I'm pretty much decided on the 9500i. I like the look, features and the quietness it has over the V1. What do you guys think? Am I correct that if there are no fixed cameras around here, 9500i and 9500ix are the same?
I can easily justify the price tag since I just paid $600 to the lawyer to take the two tickets off my record :(

If your mirror has power (compass, map lights etc) you can use an invisicord. Very simple to install and cuts the power to the detector when you shut the car off. Makes for a very neat install.
See the link below for a picture of my V1 install.

The 9500i is a great detector, but your dead wrong about looks bieng as important as performance. Function over form any day of the week. Depending on your driving, then you may need what the V1 has to offer. Don't discount it yet because you don't think it looks good. The previous poster is right aswell, it does look better in person.

Am I correct that if there are no fixed cameras around here, 9500i and 9500ix are the same? The 9500ix also locks out false alerts automatically and more accurately that the 9500i. With the 9500i, you will have to manually lock out all false alerts. The 9500ix will also remove false alerts from it's memory if they no longer exist, while the 9500i will not.
Also, neither of these will protect you from laser. Laser is an almost instantaneous reading. Only a laser jammer provides adequate protection from laser.

Hey
the one u r trying to buy is messy cuz u have to velcro that to dash or windshield. Also, i have used it, does not have a great range.
Get V1, the best detector ever existed in the history of mankind, do not get this cobra model.
Doc What, son?

On account of how it really has a good personality!
And the camera definitely does add at least 2 ounces to the thing.

if you say that there's no speed cameras in your area I would go with the V1. It has arrows, which will allow you to know where the threat is coming from.

Please tell me you didn't say that looks are as important as performance. You are a definite Cobra man. You will love the looks. They don't pick up radar for ****, but you will look cool on the side of the road.

I've lost count of how many Cobra users I've seen on the side of the road with the blue lights behind them. Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone for the advices. I ended up buying a 9500ix and I love it :) I tested with fixed speed detectors around here and the range is great! I put it next to the rear view mirror, on the right side because it blocks my view too much if it put it on the left. I hide the wiring like what Zapple suggested and it looks great!!!! I'll post a pic later.
Thanks again for saving me from buying the corba :)

there are many remote mounted detectors like the bell sti-r and some valentine models keep your car neat. there is also a pasport 9500i that is also remote which keeps your car clean.
