Will K band be phased out!

Just wondering whats on the horizon with new radar guns. Are manufacturers moving towards more Ka band. Is it possible that K band could be phased out in the next few years like x band?

I couldnt agree with you more dj rams, 3 years ago when I moved into the suburbs. The town next to me was all k band. But 3 years after I have seen them with ka band and laser.

Yeah they'll still be around though, just like there's still X band alive and well in NJ. There's only 2-3 K band units in my area while the rest is Ka and laser

When I get a real K band alert, I'm like "Whoa, K band". It catches me off guard. I barely slowed down for this alert and it turned out to be a LEO on the other side of the freeway with a customer running C/O K band.

Cops get attached to their guns too ... if he likes his K gun he's not switching, even if the technology is better (insert mean V1 joke here).

Theres a couple LEOs still in town that like to catch people off guard with their K-band units. I remember one playing radar tag with me after he saw my RD.

k band radar guns are still being made and will be for years to come. I have a friend that works for kustom signals radar the new radar guns are being made lower power for harder detection.... k band radar is a lower cost to smaller town police.

K band is still extremely popular in Texas. They are lower cost, but even the rich departments around here, driving all new Tahoes for patrol vehicles, still buy them. Maybe to save money for Tahoe gas, lol. But I actually see more K band around Dallas-Fort Worth than I do Ka.

In my area of NJ, I've never come across a K-band touting LEO. I only get Ka and X here.

k-band is about half the radar in Michigan, the rest is ka with laser spread throughout. Usually local departments, sheriffs and such run k-band and MSP runs ka. I have seen both from under cover LEO too. What it really depends on is how rich the area is and how big the department is that dictates what band they are running.

BINGO!!! It's getting cheaper, they only care about the end result, they could care less which freq it broadcasts on, if it fits in the car easily and reads your speed accurately. Why change it unless you have lots of congestion and would get moreconvictions with LIAR? Why do so many cops carry a glock? Cause Glock prices are real low for the gov. it looks good to the voters when the Chief is wasting the taxpayers money. Not only is around but I think it'll stick around for a long time as it's antennas are small enough they don't have the cumbersome issues of the X band radars I've seen.

As town budgets are squeezed, I suspect the transition from older equipement (K) to newer equipment (Ka, Laser) will be slowed. 4 out of the 5 cars in my town still run K (well, it's in the car but not necessarily turned on :p ), only 1 vehicle runs Ka. It's way too early to write off K band.

I think k-band will still be around for awhile, though I've only encounter it twice in FL. It still works fine for i/o, and for the vast majority of cars that don't use RD's the radar band doesn't matter.

In Arizona, every officer I've been alerted to has been on Ka band. I'm told my city still has some K-band devices, but I've never had an alert to them (unless they've mounted them at the local Circle K).

However, we have a lot of photo radar in the area. Permanent installations that use sensors in the road, but also some mobile units operated by a 3rd party vendor, not law enforcement officers. These mobile units, often a minivan or Dodge Durango, run a low-power K-band. The state is getting an estimated 40 more mobile units, I imagine they'll be running K band.

The icing on the cake is that it's all stationary, by law! Also, only the State Police can use it; local enforcement is very spotty and usually dependent on VASCAR lines painted on the road. ;)

What else would you expect? We also have the Amish...

I'm always much more cautious in other states because I haven't "trained" myself to deal with all that there fancy moving radar, Ka, and LIDAR you guys are always carrying on about.

K-band is still used heavyly in my area (despite what the database says). The only Ka guns I've seen used in Charlotte are by UNCC and Highway Patrol.

Will it be phased out? Eventually, but I still think K-band has another five years, if not more.

in MA, state cops run 99% K band. I see mostly the newer SUV's, chargers and undercover speed traps shooting I/O KA.

I've also seen a few MA SP cruisers with KA, but these are the ones without the lighbars on the roof.

You know, I don't really mind X. It's easily detected for 2+ miles.
