Cloth or a hat will do absolutely nothing to radar detection as long as there nothing metallic in the way of the antenna. You will not be able to receive laser, however. If you are trying to keep a low profile I think you would be better off hardwiring and mounting high unless you have a convertible or something.

I now have on visor......I also have tint line....feel it is hampering detection :roll:

Is it metallic aftermarket tint or just the standard blue factory tint? The plain blue tint shouldn't hurt radar detection, but probably kills weak LIDAR signals. Do you have a metallic film on your windscreen? (looks bronze or purple from the outside.) That would definitely kill detection. Honestly I don't think there is much else that could hurt you as long as the detector itself is functioning properly.

I always tell people who question their placement to go find a weak-ish K-band radar source like a door opener that you can in front of but not so close as to peg the strength meter. That way you can mess with the location to your heart's content and if there is anything interfering with the signal you will know about it.

I used to run my RD under a dash mat and i never had a problem with detection at all. Same with the tint strip.

I park in a garage ....There is a automatic door right in front of me :lol: When I have on visor there is no warning :twisted: But after placing on dash...I get warning :P I feel like I'm not getting the most out of my RX65 :( I just don't want it sitting in plan sight... :roll:

Why you're so afraid of driving your vehicle with the RD in plain sight??? Except VA, DC and half east of Cuba North (that's Canada), everywhere else is perfectlly legal to drive with one fully in use!!! But to give you my advice, as I live in Ontario and my S2, fully in use almost all the time, cannot be seen by anybody, and if you don't mind placing funny things on your dash, find a large wallet your RD will fit in, best is to match, or close to your dash's color, cut both ends so you can see the display and hear the alarms and then place it somewhere on the dash where is the best for you... or go to any Spy Store and get some "special" stuff where you can easily hide you RD and still use it fully!!!

"100 things to ticket you for"... such as? They are not gonna waste their time for a broken tail light, but yes, they can pull you over for not signaling a lane change or turn... America is NOT a police state (unless you are a left winger and obviously you will see US different than me)... having an RD, up and running, is not breaking the law, if he/she nailed you for speeding and they will see you RD all they can do is to laugh at you, "what a sucker, he/she spent money on a RD and I was able to ticket him/her"... hey man, have more self-esteem, more confidence in yourself... 2 months ago I was comming from a long trip to CO/UT/Montana/Mt.Rushmore/Sturgis/Dulluth in Minnessota and on my way back to Ont, in a rest area in Michigan just beside me a white van, Kentucky plate, with TWO (2) RDs in plain view, bottom of the windshield, on board a 70 year old man, of course I asked him lots of RD questions, one after another he told me he was an WW2 and Korean Vet, I have GREAT respect for military people who serve their own country and defend our freedoms and liberties, so he didn't even bother to hide them at all!!!

I have always had mine in plain sight. I would rather have the best detection possible than worry about being seen with a RD. It is not illegal in NY. If the cop beats the RD you are probably going to get a ticket anyway...or try hiding it while he is turning around.

Ya Joe, you're damn right... if the cop is able to beat your RD, good for him/her, he/she is going to be very proud that was better than you AND your RD, and for you, the loser, a hard lesson to swallow but we all gotta learn from defeats... in my case, being forced to hide it in "something" ultra-secret, but all the time on the dash, clear view of the radar/laser front area, all I have to lose is the laser REAR antenna, but up here 100% of ALL laser traps are frontal only.

Leaving your detector in plain sight is probably the best option. If you're unlucky enough to get stopped by for speeding, and then start feverishly trying to stuff your detector under your seat, the LEO is not going to know what you're doing. The only thing the LEO will see as he is sitting in his car or approaching you, is you bent over with your hand under your seat, looking for something. What do you think the LEO is going to do? For all he knows, you're some cop-hating nut with a gun, and he's not going to take any chances.

I used to stick my detector down the front of my pants when a cop would catch me speeding but not able to get a reading because they didn't even have speed detection equipment. I didn't have to suspiciously freak out in a panic to stow the merchandise - Just a quick snap from the dash....

I also leave in the Peoples Republic of Communist Canada, and I've never had a problem with my RD being detected, seen on my dash or confiscated. I usually only use my detector when out of city traffic anyway.

The only close call I've had was when some John Q Law snapped on instant-on radar when I was driving on a lone stretch of highway, no other cars to reflect the signal.

This is why after I buy my X50 from Roy this coming week, the next thing I'm gonna get is an active jammer like the M20. Anyone install the M20 on their own here? Is it difficult? Anyone install one on a motorcycle?

I would like to apologize, the "you" as in "if you are a left-winger..." was ment in a very universal notion, in no way I said that YOU are a left-winger, my mistake that I used wrong words... but something it is true, NOT ABOUT YOU, the ones on the left side of the society are the most vocal against LEOs, when the LEOs are just doing their job like anybody else... personally I hate radar and laser devices but I have nothing against LEOs... I get caught... I pay the price, but never before fighting the ticket in court when 50% chance the cop won't showup so you're free to go!
And me? I might be Canadian but 100% conservative... and crooks are everywhere... and this is a GREAT forum, ask any questions you like and within hours somebody will help you out... my cousin lives in Huntington, Long Island, 5 years since I've been there...

Thanks for sharing your life experiance 8) Mine, S2, is also on the dash but secretly conceiled in "something"... not having a cord helps you a lot, up to 5 sec to turn it off and other 3-5 sec to stash it in my pants' pocket... in Toronto and most of GTA, with all the huge gridlock, 6am to 8pm, I don't use it too much, I don't need it while doing 20 mph!!! But I do use it on 400 series and Gardiner/QEW, I also used it on my way to North Bay and back to TO... but of course I keep my eyes wide open, having an RD is no excuse of being ignorant!!! I bought from Roy Veil and Laser Shield, perfectly legal in Ont (as the HTA stated clearly), but the RD I bought it from one of my many trips in US, from Montana (no sales tax), and personally I would never buy an RD and get it from the US on my real home address... what if your package will be randomly chosen to be opened by Canada Customs, yes they will send it to you but what if they will get in touch with OPP, the Traffic Mgm Division and let them know that YOU have bought an RD??? The best would be to buy it from Roy but shipped to a mail box in Buffalo, you go down there and make personally the p/u, you come back and nobody knows about it, plus no GST and PST!!! Through UPS (Roy uses them) you will have to pay our 15% tax AND another fee, UPS charges you to clear your package when it gets in the first Canadian port of entry. And also be very careful who installs your stuff, what if they do a great job, get your money and then they will secretlly report your licence plate to the cops!!!!! The best is to do the job NOT in Ont, NOT in Quebec, but somewhere in the States where nobody cares about you installing an illegal stuff in your car... my 2-cent friendly opinion :)

As for Toronto, it's my hometown, but I live in Charlottetown, PEI now. I hear they're thinking of getting rid of the GEW...I wonder where the traffic will magically disapear to?

And as for getting the RD's shipped - I don't worry about it around here. The RCMP have always been totally inept here, and the city police have better things to do than worry about RD's. Plus, on the hush-hush, the RCMP think they're very clever that they have VG-2 detection - some of the RCMP officers I know personally think the VG-2 catches all RD's. I'm enjoying this immensely.

BTW - I sold my S2 cordless on Ebay last year to someone in Ontario - I hope the detector that was down my pants isn't on your dash! :lol:

I have driven the 401 many times, and you seldomly see a cop anyway...I have always just put the RD just above my windshield wipers and when I encountered a cop I just unplugged it and then plugged it back in later. I have never been pulled over, but if I did, I would simply put it in my glove box.

And the speed limit in Ont is ridicouslly low, 60mph (100 kph), yes they let you do 120 kph without pulling you over but most of the multicultural people arriving in this area like mushrooms after a heavy rain are not doing 1 km over the spped limit and that happens in the fast lane!!!!!!!!

A girlfriend of mine and I were on the 401, and she was doing 145kmh. We drove right past the cop within about 5 feet of his radar gun - and he didn't pull us over. What could he have been waiting for? As for turning the unit off - that's what I do whenever I get an alert on highways. While PEI doesn't have Spectre yet, I don't want to learn the hard way.

Yeah, he had the audacity to plug our Lie-berals when we had our federal election, like it was even his business. Now we're stuck with the Lieberals for another term, too. As for drugs, I hear ya. As for firearms, I have a Berretta (legally owned/registered/locked away in a safe with triggerlock) that I have for hobby target shooting at a local range. While the gun issue isn't one I'm going to get into on this board, let me just say I think our judges and our Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Thanks, Trudeau, you arsehole) are more to blame for crime than criminals.

Anyway, with US satellite, RD's and soon Howard Stern coming to satellite radio, Canada's not looking too bad. But then the winter comes..

Thanks....It's not that I'm scared of the Police....But the min you put a RD on your Dash you have 20 cars behind you :roll: I really don't speed :!: I do get a kick out of the RD :lol: Just like trying to trick my GPS :lol: I understand how people feel about having the right to use it :D :D
