Hey all. I recently bought myself a Camaro... and it didn't take long til I got that ticket. I found this site by searching for ticket defenses, and though I'm a lurker by nature, after reading and learning some things, it seemed worth my time to post and participate here.
It also made me think about why I never considered a radar detector. I guess people are just taught to believe on faith that they aren't worth the effort, but it seems that they probably are and I'll have to learn more about them.

Welcome aboard ashmak! :D
For Heaven's sake, don't buy a Cobra! I think that you will figure that one out on you own after reading tons of Cobra posts. The cool thing is that there are some very good performing RD models which won't break your wallet. The more expensive RD models offer outstanding performance plus additional featues such as the ability to notify you of red light and speed camera locations, and/or the ability to get rid of false alerts from microwave door openers based on the GPS locations of the false alerts.
I see that you are in Utah. Tell us about your driving habits (mostly highway or city, or both), what your preferred budget is, et cetera. This info can help us to steer you towards specific RD models to consider. And, of course, keep in mind that radar detectors neither give you a license to speed, nor do they garauntee you that you won't get speeding tickets. RDs are simply meant to be used as tools which increase your driving awareness and which let you know when police are out and about and actively using radar for speed enforcement.

Thanks for the welcome!
My driving habits are such: Mostly I just drive around town to work and errands and such. When I drive on the highway I tend to drive a little faster than the flow of traffic. In Utah, LEOs don't seem to enforce speeding unless you're around 10+ mph over the limit. I've unwittingly sped past an officer at 6-8 mph over and they didn't pay too much mind.
I've had two tickets in 5 years of driving, both were 10+ over.
I'm in college so I don't have a huge budget, but those higher end models sound nice. I like to be really aware of what's going on when I'm driving anyway, so it might be worth saving up for.

A good but affordabe radar detector for you would be the Whistler Pro78. It performs very well on the highway yet is fairly quiet around town. In around a month Whistler's new Pro78 SE should be out. Its biggest difference is that it will display what type of Ka radar it is detecting. While this is a neat feature, it isn't a necessity. I tend to recommend Whistlers for younger drivers since Whistler's higher end models also have a very useful Stay Alert feature which helps to keep you awake on long nighttime drives.
Another good choice in an affordable radar detector is Bel's Vector V955. It doesn't pack as many features as the Whistler Pro78, but it has slightly better performance.
Either of these relatively inexpensive RD models will serve you well without breaking the bank.
