Since my co-workers car has died I got a chance to play with a V1 over the last few days, so I thought I'd share my observations. I'm considering purchasing a V1 the next time I upgrade. My current every day RD is my RX65.

Tested units:
V1 with 1.8 firmware (this is according to V1's web site, so far as I can tell it's only missing POP).
RX65 with 6.3 firmware

Mounted both radar units center windshield just below the RVM one at a time. I made an attempt to put them as far apart as possible and leave them both on but, needless to say, I now know what an I/O X-band hit looks like :-D

The V1 was set to "A" mode, all bands on. The RX65 is in Highway mode with all bands + POP on and Ka set to USA mode.

I tested by doing my usual drive to and from work. I use this drive because I know where all the false alerts are and FHP are kind enough to have a couple of speed traps that they use on a daily basis.

Here's my real world observations on performance:

X band:

*Only tested door openers, no X-band here in FL thank goodness! *

V1 is the clear winner here, I never had any doubt that it wouldn't. It picked up some X-band sources I was previously unaware of.

The RX65 is an excellent performer also, on the X-band sources it alerted to it was about 1-2 seconds behind.

K band:
It's a draw, the V1 actually stayed silent in some places where my RX65 usually alerts on (all door openers). I was lucky enough to find a local city cop running K-band and the V1 was maybe half a second ahead of the RX65.

Ka band:
V1 comes out on top, but only just. I found the RX65 is actually a little quicker on the draw with I/O, but the range is slightly (maybe 1 second) better on the V1. I suspect the newer POP enabled firmware will level things out. Now, where the V1 really shines is the rear detection thank, it kept alerting for a good 3-4 seconds more in those cases.

Laser:
Not encountered, but I would expect the V1 to win here.

Arrows:
V1 wins! I love those arrows, I really hope when the patent expires other RD manufacturers start using them.

Interface:
RX65 wins, by a wide margin. I absolutely hate the V1's interface, it's just unnecessarily complicated. Those arrows are the only redeeming feature really. The bogey counter? Not really useful, who cares how many cops are there - it only takes one to give me a ticket!

Audio alerts:
RX65 wins simply because the volume is louder, I really don't like having to turn the V1 on full blast for it to be audible over the radio (and I don't keep my radio very loud). Maybe his speaker is dodgy? The alert tones we equally intuitive on both.

Mounts:
V1 has a better mount, that V1 stayed rock solid and hardly wobbled at all even on rough terrain. It DOES look flimsy in my opinion, but maybe that's me

The RX65 mounting bracket sucks, sorry Beltronics! I like that it's made of metal, but it's way to small and fiddly.

Conclusion:
I'd really like to do this test again with a V1 that's running the very latest firmware. I'm impressed enough with this V1 that I'll definitely consider buying one next time around. I'm very pleased with my trusty RX65, it cost me $100 less but it's definitely not performing like it did. I would recommend both RDs to someone in the market, but the V1 edges out the competition in terms of performance (esp. if you live in an X-band area). I wish I had $400 to burn on a new one!

I'm not done with the V1 yet, he just sold his car as junk so I've got it for a few more days. I'll post more observations as I see them.

Comments welcome.

I love reading user reviews! Those are some very good initial observations. Have more fun testing! Maybe you will get lucky and find some cops running radar who are located over a hill or around a curve. :)

I sure hope so, the RX65 is great at over the hill and not so great around curves - I'd like to see how the V1 handles it. Been rainy here the last few days so not encountering many cops :(

I am not going into a large discription but I have found my V1 to outperform all my other detectors by far...RX65, 9500i, XTR-695, and GX65 was the closest usually only a second behind on Ka band.

sorry to say this but the Valentine 1 and the Beltronics RX65 are even the same sport.

I TOTALLY disagree with you about the bogey counter. Watch my video to see why:

Here is Robm425's video too:

I was taking a short 50 mile trip when I get a KA hit. I slow to the PSL and meet him moments later. He passes me and then I get a few KA from the rear. So I start to get back up to speed when I get a front K hit, so I slow back down. I meet this LEO and he goes on by. So I start back up to speed and get strong KA rear and 5 seconds later get good KA on front. 2 bogey running KA one in front one in rear. Total of 3 LEOs. The first one flips and gets behind me while I am still meeting the 3rd one. I love the arrows and bogey counter. The X50 was my favorite but it doesnt give me that much info.

I had a similar experience with the Bogey counter in Farmers Branch last week. Working late Thursday night it was dark when I left the office.
Farmers Branch Webb Chapel Road is just not a road to speed on for 2.6 miles it is known as radar/laser alley for those who travel this stretch.
I was painting two KA signals up front for 3/4 of a mile going towards LBJthen the counter went to three.
Sure enough one LEO hiding is his familiar spot a few more seconds the other passed me then a half mile up the other LEO passed.
V1 painted 3 to the rear the counter then went to 4 in the rear with three dropping off as the distance increased.
One rear signal all the way to LBJ Freeway. I caught the red light before you have access to LBJ sure enough the other LEO from the rear came into view as I waited for the light to change.
This was the first time for me to experience such a situation, it would have been tough attemting to imagine what was going on with your regular beeping unit with no bogey counter or directional arrows.
Unless you have experienced an event such as above it is difficult to convey the incredible operation of the V1.
It may have nothing to do with how many units you are painting (which I disagree with) but the relationship in direction with your vehicle where those multiple units exist. The bogey counter was invaluable in this situation.
Really liked the video that just jogged my mind for the experience last week.

If the 8500 and rx65 are the same thing. I was messing around with a friend on a very straight highway and we both were doing 30+ psl. He has 8500 and I have a v1. I picked up 3 ka bogeys and slowed down. He was about 1000 feet ahead of me and picked up the signal about 5 seconds after I did.

The V1 smokes the RX65 (I have both) on low power K such as GATSO etc. The ramp up is horrible and there's atleast 3 seconds better detection from the V1.

Well, today I encountered a cop running Ka 34.7 the V1 gave me about a 5 second warning over the RX65 [1] and the arrows told me he drove around and followed me. Then he ran my tag... then he turned off. Thank you V1 ;)

[1] Both RDs would have given me plenty of time to slow down.

We sell both the V1 and the RX65 on our European Websites, so I've had lots of experience with both.

On K-Band, they usually alert at about the same distance (sometimes the V1 does a little better than the RX-65).

On Ka-Band, the V1 is the winner. Both give plenty of warning against any US Ka-Band radar gun, but against the weaker Ka-Band photo/radar units used in Europe, the V1 gives up to 50% better warning distances. And this becomes crucial when dealing with the very weak, rear-firing RAMER and RAMET Ka-Band units used in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

On Laser, the V1 is the clear winner. In all our testing, the RX-65 only sounds an alert when the laser beam directly hits it. The V1 is able to detect reflected light energy, meaning you've got a chance of it detecting the laser before the laser is actually measuring your speed.

Best wishes,

John

That V1 seriously needs a tuneup... ;)

Thanks for the feedback all, I gave the V1 back today - gonna miss it too :)

My final observations are:

City - The V1 kicks the RX65 butt on Ka band (see my 5 second post), I've heard off axis is not so great but it's definitely better on the V1. K band they're about the same, X band - well, it's all doors here so can't really make an informed observation. The V1 picked up a lot of X band falses so I can only assume it'd be much better at sniffing out cops running X-band.

Highway - V1 is better but only slightly on Ka band - about 1-2 second warning. K band V1 is mayybe 1 second better, X band it's 2-3 seconds better (again with the caveat that it's always a false here). Honestly, at the speeds I drive they both give me ample warning but if I was more of a lead foor the V1 would be the clear winner.

Laser - Try as I might I couldn't find anyone shooting laser but again, all the reviews say the V1 is the best laser detector out there and I see no reason to dispute those claims. I have a family member who works for the police department and he has promised that one weekend he'll get some fellow officers together so we can do a proper side by side laser comparison. Should be fun!

Arrows & Bogey Counter - I'm gonna miss those arrows lot! Bogey Counter... I can see it being useful in some situations (as others have noticed) but hey, if it's beeping I slow down and don't speed up until it stops.

Final thoughts... I'm sold on the V1, if I had $400 burning a hole in my wallet I'd buy it right away. I don't, and my wife'd kill me anyway... :) The RX65 is a great detector also, well worth the $250 I paid for it (got a great deal), and it stacks up nicely against the big boys. If I could ask for just ONE feature on the V1 that I really missed it's a tech display that tells me the frequency of the radar that's hitting me.

^^ Nice final comments. Too bad you have to return the V1. I hate having to give up any RD since they all are fun to use.

I think the V1 in your test needs a tune. V1 owns K-band.

No radar detector I have ever used (see sig) picks up K band as well as my V1.
